Austin-based Japanese punk band Peelander-Z is recovering after a devastating tour van crash in New Mexico that left all three members hospitalized with serious injuries. The accident happened during the second day of the band’s spring tour while the group was traveling to Albuquerque after performing in Dallas the previous night.
The crash has shocked fans across Austin’s music community because Peelander-Z is widely known for its energetic live performances, colorful costumes and strong presence in the independent punk scene. The band’s longtime agent, Brad Raffenaud, later confirmed that the touring van was completely destroyed in the wreck.
Band Members Suffer Broken Spine, Skull Fracture and Multiple Surgeries
According to updates shared by the band, member Kengo, known as “Yellow,” suffered two broken vertebrae along with multiple broken ribs. He was initially unresponsive after the crash but later regained some alertness. The band said he can now move his fingers and toes, though he remains in severe pain and currently cannot swallow.
Yumi, known as “Pink,” underwent several surgeries after suffering a fractured pelvis and tibia. The group said she is alert and responding positively to treatment, though it remains unclear when she may be released from the hospital.
Another member, “Tiger,” suffered a skull fracture and continues to be monitored for possible traumatic brain injury. Doctors are reportedly observing his condition closely, but the band said he is alert and could potentially be discharged within the next few days if recovery continues.
Authorities in New Mexico are still investigating the exact cause of the crash. One of the most unusual details surrounding the accident is that none of the three band members remembers what happened before the wreck.
