PHILADELPHIA, October 9, 2026 — Philadelphia police fatally shot an armed man on Benjamin Franklin Parkway near 21st Street on Friday morning after authorities said he fired a gun during a confrontation with officers in Center City.
The shooting unfolded shortly after 11 a.m. near Philadelphia’s museum district, prompting a major police response, traffic closures and a shelter-in-place alert inside the Franklin Institute.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel confirmed that a Philadelphia police officer and a SEPTA police officer each fired one shot, striking the man. He was taken to Jefferson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:36 a.m.
Philadelphia Police Shooting: Armed Man Confronted Officers Near 21st Street
Police responded after receiving reports of a man carrying a firearm along Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Witnesses initially reported that he was pointing a gun at people in the area.
According to Bethel, officers attempted to calm the situation and communicate with the man using a bullhorn.
The man repeatedly waved his revolver and pointed it toward officers, prompting them to retreat and seek cover, the commissioner said.
Despite those efforts, the confrontation escalated when the man allegedly fired his weapon.
Two officers then returned fire, each discharging one round. Both shots struck the man, police said.
Investigators recovered a firearm near a park bench at the scene. Authorities are examining the weapon as part of their investigation.
Armed Man Dies at Hospital After Police Gunfire
The injured man was rushed to Jefferson University Hospital following the shooting but was pronounced dead at approximately 11:36 a.m.
Police had not publicly released his name or age. Bethel said the man appeared to be in his 50s.
No bystanders were struck by gunfire, according to the police commissioner’s initial account.
Investigators are also examining whether the confrontation may have involved an attempt to provoke a fatal police response. That possibility remains under investigation and has not been established as a finding.

Benjamin Franklin Parkway Closed as SWAT Officers Respond
The shooting brought numerous police vehicles and SWAT personnel to the Parkway, a major route connecting Center City with the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Authorities closed sections of the roadway between approximately 20th and 22nd streets while investigators secured the scene.
Inside the nearby Franklin Institute, visitors were instructed over a loudspeaker to gather in the atrium and shelter in place, according to a witness interviewed by The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The precaution illustrated how an armed confrontation in a busy public area can affect families, museum visitors, pedestrians and commuters even when they are not directly involved.
Drivers and visitors should check current traffic conditions before traveling through the museum district, as the reopening status of every affected street has not been confirmed.
Police Investigate Gunfire and Officers’ Use of Force
The investigation will focus on the sequence of events leading to the shooting, including the man’s actions, officers’ attempts to communicate and the decision to use deadly force.
Police are also working to determine whether the man discharged his firearm before officers arrived. Initial reports suggested earlier gunfire, but that detail had not been confirmed.
Evidence from the scene, available video recordings and witness accounts may help investigators reconstruct the confrontation.
For additional reporting on Commissioner Bethel’s account, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the fatal shooting and police response.
Key Questions Remain After Fatal Parkway Shooting
Authorities have not identified the deceased man or established why he was carrying and allegedly pointing a firearm in the area.
The incident follows other fatal police confrontations involving armed individuals, including a police shooting involving an armed suspect near the Las Vegas airport area.
More broadly, emergency responses in heavily traveled urban locations can create immediate safety concerns for people nearby, as seen in the New York City emergency involving a vehicle and five people near a sewer manhole.
Investigators have not announced final findings regarding the Philadelphia officers’ use of force. Additional information is expected as authorities identify the man and review evidence from Friday’s shooting.
