Pierre Deny, the French actor who brought quiet menace and authority to Netflixâs Emily in Paris as fashion executive Louis de LĂ©on, has died at 69 after a sudden battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS.
His family confirmed that Deny died on May 25, 2026. In a statement shared with French broadcaster TF1, his daughters said his death followed a âsudden and severeâ case of ALS, a progressive neurological disease also known in France as Charcotâs disease.
For many viewers outside France, Deny became familiar through seasons three and four of Emily in Paris. He played Louis de LĂ©on, the powerful CEO of fictional luxury group JVMA and father of Nicolas de LĂ©on, played by Paul Forman. His character became part of one of the showâs major fashion-industry storylines, adding tension around Nicolasâ relationship with Mindy Chen, played by Ashley Park.
The timing of Denyâs death has added another emotional note for fans of the Netflix series. His passing comes days after Netflix confirmed that Emily in Paris will end with its sixth season, with filming moving through Greece, Monaco and Paris. Swikblog recently covered the showâs final chapter here: Emily in Paris Ends With Season 6 as Netflix Starts Filming Final Chapter.
But Denyâs career was much larger than one Netflix role. In France, he was a seasoned performer whose work stretched across theater, television and long-running drama. He began acting on stage in the 1980s and gradually became a dependable presence on French TV, appearing in popular series including Julie Lescaut, Fabio Montale, Une femme dâhonneur and Cinq soeurs.
His most familiar role for French audiences was Dr. Renaud Dumaze in Demain Nous Appartient, also known as Tomorrow Is Ours. Deny appeared in hundreds of episodes of the soap opera, making him a regular figure in homes across France long before international viewers discovered him on Netflix.
More recently, he appeared in French productions including Le Fil dâAriane and Camping Paradis. According to Entertainment Weekly, his daughters confirmed the news through AFP, while colleagues from his long television career began sharing tributes soon after.
Actress and singer Sylvie Vartan, who worked with Deny in Isabelle Mergaultâs stage play Ne Me Regardez Pas Comme Ca, remembered him as a generous actor and a sensitive, funny man. Luce Mouchel, his co-star from Tomorrow Is Ours, wrote an emotional tribute recalling years of filming together, train rides, lunches, conversations and friendship.

ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and gradually weakens the muscles used for movement, speech and breathing. The Mayo Clinic notes that the condition has no cure and becomes more disabling over time.
Denyâs death is being mourned by viewers who knew him from Emily in Paris and by French audiences who followed his work for decades. His screen presence was never loud, but it carried weight â whether he was playing a doctor, a television regular or a polished fashion boss in one of Netflixâs most-watched international comedies.
Pierre Deny is survived by his daughters, who announced his passing with deep emotion.
