Resident Evil just crashed Sony’s September 3 State of Play â but not with a new game. PlayStation opened the showcase with an extended look at Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie, putting Austin Abrams’ Bryan through a brutal survival-horror sequence ahead of the film’s September 18, 2026 theatrical release.
The surprise reveal immediately gave Resident Evil fans something unexpected to dissect, while the wider State of Play continued with new PlayStation and third-party announcements, including a major spotlight on Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

Resident Evil Brings Survival Horror to State of Play
The new footage follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier whose nighttime journey spirals into something that feels increasingly like a Resident Evil level gone wrong.
Snow, wrecked vehicles, gunfire and mounting threats surround Bryan as he tries to survive. More importantly for longtime players, he isn’t presented as another heavily armed action hero capable of mowing through everything in his path.
That is deliberate.
Director Zach Cregger has described Bryan as an ordinary person rather than someone comparable to experienced Resident Evil protagonists such as Leon S. Kennedy. That gives the movie a familiar survival-horror setup: a vulnerable character enters a dangerous environment without knowing exactly what is waiting around the next corner.
Is the Resident Evil Movie Based on a Game?
Not directly. The new Resident Evil movie tells an original story rather than recreating the plot of a specific Capcom title.
That means fans shouldn’t expect a scene-for-scene adaptation of Resident Evil 2 or another existing game. Instead, Cregger is borrowing the franchise’s underlying survival formula â escalating danger, hostile environments and a protagonist constantly being pushed deeper into trouble.
It’s an approach that could give longtime fans recognizable Resident Evil tension without forcing the movie to repeat a story they already know.
When Is the Resident Evil Movie Coming Out?
There isn’t much longer to wait. Resident Evil hits U.S. theaters on September 18, 2026, placing the State of Play appearance roughly two weeks before release.
Austin Abrams leads the cast alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser. Cregger, whose previous directing credits include Barbarian and Weapons, directs the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten.
Players looking for the confirmed movie information can check Sony Pictures’ official Resident Evil page.
Why Resident Evil Showing Up at State of Play Makes Sense
A movie opening a gaming presentation might initially seem unusual, but Resident Evil and PlayStation have been connected for three decades. Capcom’s original Resident Evil launched on the first PlayStation in 1996 and helped define console survival horror.
The State of Play appearance also puts the film directly in front of the audience most likely to notice its gaming influences.
The biggest question now is whether Cregger can translate the feeling of playing Resident Evil rather than simply borrowing its monsters and branding. The Bryan footage suggests vulnerability, atmosphere and escalating danger will be central to that attempt.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Was Another Major State of Play Focus
Resident Evil wasn’t the only major name attached to the September showcase. Sony had already confirmed an extended presentation for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.
The RPG is targeting Spring 2027, with Cloud and his party heading toward the final stage of their battle against Sephiroth as the threat from Meteor and the Weapons grows.
The showcase follows the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play, while Sony’s upcoming lineup also includes Marvel’s Wolverine and its limited-edition PS5 hardware.
Resident Evil Fans Have One Big Question Left
The new footage makes Cregger’s direction clearer: this Resident Evil isn’t trying to turn Bryan into an unstoppable hero. It’s putting an ordinary character into the kind of increasingly hostile situation players have been navigating since the franchise began.
Whether that translates into a Resident Evil movie that finally captures the games’ survival-horror tension will become clear soon. Resident Evil opens in theaters September 18, 2026.
