A man has been shot dead by police in Sydney’s inner east after two women were allegedly attacked at a Potts Point unit complex on Tuesday morning.
Officers were called to a building on St Neot Avenue at about 10:50am after reports an armed man had entered the complex and assaulted two women in separate units.
Two women taken to hospital
Police said the women, aged 48 and 56, were taken to hospital in stable condition for treatment.
Authorities said one woman’s injuries were consistent with being assaulted with a weapon, while the other’s injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma. NSW Ambulance said one woman had “quite significant” head and facial injuries but was conscious, while the second woman’s head injuries were more superficial.
Taser used before officer fired
Police said the man was sighted with a knife and allegedly threatened officers. NSW Police stated officers attempted to deploy a taser, but it was not effective.
Police said an officer discharged a single shot after the man allegedly confronted police. The man was later confirmed deceased at the scene.
Critical incident declared
A critical incident was declared and a crime scene was established, restricting access to the street as investigators conducted inquiries. The man has not yet been formally identified and was believed to be in his late 30s to 40s.
The incident will be investigated by NSW Police’s Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
