Announced on October 8, 2026, the project reunites much of the original creative team, including screenwriter Adele Lim, director Jon M. Chu and novelist Kevin Kwan. The move brings new momentum to a franchise whose planned movie sequels spent years in development.
The series will follow events after the original film, giving audiences another look at the romance, family rivalries and extraordinary wealth surrounding Singapore’s fictional Young family.
HBO Confirms Eight-Episode Crazy Rich Asians Sequel
According to HBO’s official announcement, the adaptation will consist of eight hour-long episodes, rather than a single theatrical sequel.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 movie, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Chu and Kwan are also executive producers, alongside original film producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
HBO and Warner Bros. Television are producing the series. The writers’ room is already working on the project, although detailed storylines have not been revealed.
Original Cast Returns: Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh
Four familiar characters are confirmed to return:
- Constance Wu as Rachel Chu: The American economics professor whose relationship with Nick challenged his family’s expectations.
- Henry Golding as Nick Young: Rachel’s wealthy fiancé and a member of Singapore’s influential Young family.
- Ronny Chieng as Eddie Cheng: Nick’s cousin, known for his obsession with wealth and status.
- Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Young: Nick’s formidable mother, whose disapproval shaped the original romance.
Wu, Golding and Chieng will be series regulars, while Yeoh returns in a recurring role.
HBO has not confirmed whether Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Ken Jeong or Harry Shum Jr. will reprise their characters.

Crazy Rich Asians Plot: Rachel and Nick’s Next Chapter
The original film ended with Rachel and Nick celebrating their engagement after overcoming Eleanor’s opposition. Their future together provides a natural starting point for the television continuation.
Kwan’s bestselling trilogy includes Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. The later novels explore family secrets, inheritance disputes and complicated relationships among Asia’s wealthy elite.
However, HBO has not confirmed whether the series will directly adapt either sequel novel or introduce new material.
The longer format could allow supporting characters greater attention, much as Netflix is expanding its romantic-drama universe through a Bridgerton prequel about Violet and Edmund.
Release Date, 2027 Production Plans and First Teaser
HBO has not announced an official premiere date. Reports surrounding the announcement point to production beginning in 2027, although an exact filming schedule has not been publicly established.
An announcement video featuring footage from the original movie has circulated online. It should not be mistaken for a full trailer showing newly filmed scenes.
HBO has also not disclosed filming locations, international streaming dates or whether episodes will arrive weekly.
Eight-Year Wait Followed Major Box-Office Success
Released in August 2018, Crazy Rich Asians earned approximately $239 million worldwide against a reported $30 million production budget.
The movie became a landmark Hollywood romantic comedy featuring a predominantly Asian cast. Its commercial success prompted sequel discussions, but the planned theatrical follow-ups faced years of delays.
Lim’s departure from an earlier sequel project amid a reported screenwriting pay dispute was among the developments that complicated those plans.
The television adaptation now offers a different approach: more screen time for the characters and greater room to explore Kwan’s fictional world.
The announcement also reflects a wider entertainment-industry interest in expanding established properties across formats, including Xbox’s move into film and television entertainment.
For fans, the central news is clear: Rachel, Nick, Eddie and Eleanor are returning. The full supporting cast, detailed plot and premiere date remain the next major announcements to watch.
