RICHMOND, Va. — A night meant for celebration ended in grief after gunfire erupted in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom early Saturday, leaving two people dead and seven others injured, according to police.
Officers were called to the 0–100 block of North 18th Street at about 2:47 a.m. after reports of shots fired. By the time responders reached the scene, multiple victims had been hit in what investigators say appears to have started as a street fight that escalated rapidly.
Innocent bystander identified by family
One of the victims was later identified by her family as Genesis Jones, 23. Relatives said the family had traveled from Petersburg to Shockoe Bottom to celebrate a younger brother’s birthday. They say Genesis was simply walking along the street when she was struck by gunfire.
Her brother described her as someone who loved bringing people together and said she was not involved in the disturbance that preceded the shooting. What began as a birthday outing, the family said, turned into a moment they will never forget.
Second victim and overall victim count
Police also located an adult man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not publicly released his name.
In total, nine people were shot:
Two deceased: Genesis Jones and an adult male.
Seven wounded: three adult males and four adult females.
Emergency responders transported four of the injured by ambulance, while three others arrived at medical facilities in private vehicles.
What police say happened
Investigators believe the violence began with a fight in the street. As more people intervened, shots were fired and the situation spiraled. Police have said there were likely at least two shooters, though details may change as detectives confirm timelines, statements, and evidence.
Officials have stressed that when firearms are present, confrontations that might otherwise end quickly can escalate into mass casualties within seconds.
Witness accounts and a chaotic scene
People in the area described hearing bursts of gunfire and watching panic spread through nearby blocks as patrons searched for cover. Some witnesses reported that the sound of gunfire seemed to move closer, prompting people to duck behind barriers and inside businesses for safety.
Police confirmed that multiple vehicles were struck by bullets. The scene stretched across several blocks as forensic teams worked to document evidence and recover shell casings from the street and near damaged cars.
Street closures and investigation
Authorities shut down parts of Shockoe Bottom as the investigation continued, restricting access across multiple intersections near the shooting area. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and using investigative technology to identify suspects and trace movements before and after the gunfire.

This remains an active investigation, and officials have said additional updates may follow as victim identities are formally confirmed and suspects are identified.
