The Social Security Administration (SSA) is entering the final stage of its May 2026 payment calendar, with millions of Americans set to receive their latest Social Security benefits on Wednesday, May 27.
The payment is scheduled for retirement, disability and survivor beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 21st and 31st of any month. The SSA distributes most monthly Social Security payments using a staggered three-Wednesdays system based on recipients’ birth dates.
Under the May 2026 schedule, beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th received payments on May 13, while those born between the 11th and 20th were paid on May 20. The final round on May 27 will complete the month’s regular Social Security distribution cycle.
The SSA also notes that people receiving benefits through another person’s work record, including some survivor beneficiaries and spouses, are paid according to the other person’s birth date rather than their own.
SSI recipients and early-May payments explained
Separate payments were already issued on May 1 for several beneficiary groups, including recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The SSI program supports low-income Americans who are elderly, blind or living with disabilities and is different from standard Social Security because eligibility is based on financial need instead of work history.
According to SSA figures, around 7.3 million Americans currently receive SSI benefits nationwide.
May 1 was also the payment date for beneficiaries who began collecting Social Security before May 1997. Normally, these recipients are paid on the third day of the month, but the schedule was adjusted because May 3 fell on a weekend in 2026.
In addition, approximately 2.5 million Americans who receive both SSI and Social Security benefits also received their monthly Social Security payment on May 1.
