Steam Frame’s $1,059 Price Hides Extra Costs—and a Purchase Lotter

Valve’s Steam Frame has officially arrived with a starting price of $1,059, but joining the launch does not mean buyers can immediately order the wireless VR headset. Valve is using a randomized reservation system, while several expected accessories are excluded from the standard package.

The Steam Frame is available with 256GB of storage for $1,059 and 1TB for $1,299. UK prices are £889 and £1,089 respectively, while Australian buyers will pay AU$1,609 or AU$1,969.

Although both packages include the headset, two controllers, a dedicated wireless adapter and a USB-C cable, Valve’s official 45W power supply is sold separately for $29. Buyers wanting controller hand straps, a top head strap and an extended light blocker must purchase the $59 Ergonomic Accessories Kit.

Signing Up Does Not Guarantee an Early Steam Frame

Valve is not processing Steam Frame purchases on a first-come, first-served basis. Customers can register for either storage model until September 17 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Once registration closes, Valve will conduct a one-time randomization to determine who enters the reservation queue and who is placed on the waitlist. Emails explaining each applicant’s position are expected on September 17, with the first purchase invitations beginning September 18.

Being placed in the reservation queue means Valve has allocated a future unit to that customer. It does not necessarily mean the headset will ship immediately. Waitlisted customers will only move forward if additional inventory becomes available.

Valve says the system is intended to improve the buying process and discourage resellers. However, the company’s previous hardware queues suggest availability could move at different speeds depending on the model and region.

Direct Steam shipping is currently limited to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, European Union countries and Australia. Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong are being served through authorized distributor KOMODO, with South Korea expected later. India is not included among the confirmed launch markets.

The Features Buyers May Assume Are Included

Valve describes Steam Frame as capable of handling a user’s entire Steam library, but there is an important distinction. More demanding PC games are primarily played through wireless streaming from a compatible gaming PC. Valve says over 100 games are already verified for standalone play on the headset itself.

A dedicated 6GHz wireless adapter is included to create a direct connection between the headset and a PC. Eye tracking powers Valve’s foveated streaming technology, concentrating image quality where the player is looking while reducing detail in peripheral vision.

The headset can also display conventional non-VR games, giving players a virtual screen for their existing Steam titles. Steam Machine streaming, however, is not available at launch and is planned as a later addition.

Other limitations are receiving less attention. Steam Frame currently lacks controller-free hand tracking, and its external tracking cameras provide monochrome rather than colour passthrough. That leaves it behind mixed-reality headsets such as Meta Quest 3 in certain applications despite its significantly higher price.

Battery endurance could also influence buying decisions. The Verge’s launch review reported less than two hours in some real-world use, although runtime will vary depending on whether games are streamed or processed directly on the headset.

The $240 difference between the two storage versions may be difficult to justify for some users because Steam Frame supports expandable microSD storage. Valve has designed compatible cards to move between Steam Frame, Steam Deck and Steam Machine, allowing installed games to travel between devices without a complete download.

Valve is including Half-Life: Alyx with the headset, but existing owners will not receive a second giftable copy. The game can only be redeemed once per Steam Frame device.

These details make Steam Frame an ambitious but expensive first-generation purchase: the headset offers unusually flexible access to PC and VR games, while its lottery-based availability, missing charger and unfinished features create additional considerations beyond the advertised price.

Full prices, reservation dates and regional availability are listed in Valve’s official Steam Frame announcement. Gaming readers can also see how another major franchise is changing direction in the upcoming open-world StarCraft shooter.
