Target has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of several Up & Up baby wipes products after federal testing found bacterial contamination that could pose a serious health risk to infants, young children and people with weakened immune systems.
The recall affects Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes sold in multiple package sizes. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recall notice, testing identified Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli in product samples after customers reported discoloration in some wipes.
The FDA said these products are mainly used on newborns, infants and young children, who may be more vulnerable to opportunistic infections because their immune systems are still developing. In healthy people, exposure may lead to local infection, especially if the wipes are used on skin with cuts, irritation or minor lesions.
Why the Recall Matters
Health officials warned that the risk may be more serious for newborns, infants, young children and immunocompromised individuals. In those groups, infection can spread into the bloodstream and may lead to life-threatening complications such as sepsis or pneumonia.
Target and the wipes manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, have received reports involving product discoloration, skin irritation, eye irritation and infections potentially linked to the recalled wipes. Those reports remain under investigation.
Product contamination recalls have become an increasing focus for regulators in recent years. Earlier this year, the FDA also issued a warning involving a contaminated eczema treatment after testing detected harmful bacteria, highlighting ongoing concerns about manufacturing quality controls in personal-care products. The agency’s action followed the MG217 eczema cream recall over staph bacteria contamination, which prompted consumers nationwide to check products in their homes.
