North Carolina Holds Off TCU for 15-10 Win

North Carolina’s defense ultimately decided the game.

TCU scored all 10 of its points in the first quarter but was unable to add another point over the remaining three quarters.

The Tar Heels entered halftime with a 12-10 advantage after one of the game’s most unusual moments — a disastrous TCU fourth-down play deep in its own territory resulted in an illegal-kicking penalty and a safety for North Carolina.

UNC then produced another crucial defensive play in the third quarter when Melkart Abou-Jaoude sacked TCU quarterback Jaden Craig and forced a fumble.

Jake Harvey recovered the ball, and North Carolina converted the turnover into points when Andrew Burrell kicked a 28-yard field goal.

That field goal made it 15-10.

Remarkably, those proved to be the final points of the game.

TCU Mistakes Prove Costly Against Tar Heels

TCU had opportunities to take control of the game, particularly behind running back Jeremy Payne, who produced more than 100 rushing yards and delivered several of the Horned Frogs’ biggest offensive plays.

But penalties, failed fourth-down attempts and turnovers repeatedly hurt TCU.

The Horned Frogs had already accumulated 10 penalties for 85 yards during the fourth quarter, compared with only two penalties for North Carolina.

TCU also failed on its first three fourth-down attempts, including a critical possession deep in UNC territory during the fourth quarter.

Those missed opportunities became increasingly costly as North Carolina protected its five-point advantage.

Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. also gave the Tar Heels stability in his first start for the program, passing for more than 200 yards as UNC avoided the kind of major offensive mistakes that plagued TCU.

The result carries additional significance for Bill Belichick.

TCU spoiled Belichick’s North Carolina debut one year earlier, crushing the Tar Heels 48-14 in Chapel Hill to begin the 2025 season.

North Carolina eventually finished Belichick’s first season with a 4-8 record, increasing the pressure on the program entering Year 2.

The rematch could hardly have unfolded more differently.

Instead of allowing TCU to pull away, UNC forced mistakes, won crucial defensive situations and prevented the Horned Frogs from scoring after the opening quarter.

It gives Belichick an immediate victory to begin his second season and provides North Carolina with an encouraging early indication that the rebuilt roster can compete in close games.

The victory also came on a historic stage.

Saturday’s game was North Carolina’s first international football game and TCU’s first outside the United States, with the teams meeting at Aviva Stadium as part of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.
