Several people were taken to hospital after a vehicle crashed through a GoodLife Fitness location at Sherwood Forest Mall in London, Ontario, on Friday morning, damaging the building, disrupting a busy workout period and triggering a major emergency response.
The incident unfolded shortly before 7:45 a.m. at the shopping centre near Wonderland Road and Gainsborough Road. Emergency crews responded after reports that a vehicle had struck the rear portion of the GoodLife Fitness facility, leaving a large hole in the building and forcing authorities to close off part of the property.
London police confirmed that multiple people were injured and transported to hospital. As of Friday morning, officials had not released the number of victims, the severity of injuries or information about the driver involved.
Investigators remain at the scene as they work to determine what caused the vehicle to enter the building.
Morning routine turns into emergency scene
For many residents in northwest London, Friday began as a normal workday. Sherwood Forest Mall was opening for business, and gym members were arriving for early workouts when the crash occurred.
According to police, the first 911 call was received at approximately 7:41 a.m. First responders arriving at the scene found extensive damage to the GoodLife Fitness location and several injured individuals requiring medical attention.
The vehicle struck the west side of the gym, breaching the exterior wall and entering the building. Witnesses described a loud impact that immediately drew attention from nearby businesses and shoppers.
One worker in the area told local media the force of the crash was so significant that it felt like an earthquake. Another witness claimed she saw the vehicle move rapidly across the parking lot before hitting the structure. Police have not independently confirmed those accounts.
Questions remain about how many people were inside
Witnesses reported that a group fitness class may have been preparing to begin when the vehicle entered the building. Some estimated that around 30 participants could have been in the area at the time, though authorities have not verified those figures.
The uncertainty surrounding occupancy levels is one reason investigators continue to gather information from witnesses and review evidence from the scene.
One witness also estimated that paramedics transported approximately seven people to hospital. Police have only confirmed that multiple injured individuals were taken for treatment and have not released an official count.
The GoodLife Fitness location remained closed following the incident. A notice posted outside informed members that the facility would remain closed until further notice because of the emergency situation.
Emergency crews stabilize damaged building
Beyond treating the injured, emergency personnel faced the challenge of securing a damaged commercial structure.
Images from the scene showed firefighters and other responders using stabilization equipment around the damaged wall while police maintained a safety perimeter in the parking lot. The vehicle reportedly remained lodged inside the building during part of the initial response.
Building stabilization is a critical step in incidents involving structural damage. Emergency crews must ensure walls, support systems and surrounding areas remain safe before investigators and repair teams can fully access affected sections.
The shopping centre remained partially restricted as crews continued their work.
Investigation focuses on what caused the crash
At this stage, authorities have not indicated whether the incident may have been caused by driver error, a medical episode, vehicle malfunction or another factor.
Police are expected to review surveillance footage, witness statements, physical evidence and vehicle data as part of the investigation.
Crashes involving occupied commercial buildings are relatively rare but often attract significant attention because they can place large numbers of people at risk in locations not designed to withstand vehicle impacts. Fitness centres are particularly vulnerable during peak attendance periods when members gather in workout areas and group classes.
The crash also highlights how quickly emergency scenes can unfold in dense public spaces. London has faced other serious incidents requiring rapid first-responder coordination, including a major emergency response in London, Ontario after a residential fire sent multiple people to hospital.
