A single ticket sold in Arkansas has turned Christmas Eve into one of the most unforgettable nights in American lottery history, after claiming the staggering $1.817 billion Powerball jackpot drawn on December 24.
The winning numbers for Wednesday night’s drawing were 4, 25, 31, 52 and 59, with a red Powerball of 19. Officials confirmed that only one ticket matched all six numbers, securing what is now the second-largest Powerball jackpot ever won in the United States.
For the lucky winner, the prize comes with a choice: an estimated $834.9 million lump-sum cash payout before taxes, or the full jackpot paid out over 30 years through an annuity that increases annually by 5 percent.
While the identity of the winner has not yet been disclosed, the Arkansas Lottery confirmed the ticket was sold within the state, instantly putting Arkansas at the center of a national holiday headline.
This Christmas Eve victory is especially rare. Powerball jackpots have been hit only once before on Christmas Eve, back in 2011, and just a handful of times on Christmas Day itself since the game began in 1992.
The massive prize came after 47 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner — the longest jackpot run in Powerball history. The last time the Powerball jackpot was won was in September, when tickets in Missouri and Texas split a $1.787 billion prize, making this only the second time back-to-back jackpots have exceeded $1 billion.
Although $1.817 billion is extraordinary, it narrowly misses the all-time Powerball record. That honor still belongs to the $2.04 billion jackpot won by a single ticket in California in 2022.
To win the Powerball jackpot, players must match all five white balls plus the red Powerball — a feat with odds of just 1 in 292.2 million. Despite those steep odds, lottery jackpots have grown dramatically over the past decade as ticket prices remain low and more rollovers drive jackpots higher.
Powerball tickets cost $2 and are sold across 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 11 p.m. Eastern Time.
Lottery officials urge winners to take their time, seek professional financial and legal advice, and protect their privacy where possible. Depending on state law, winners may be able to remain anonymous — a decision many experts say can be as valuable as the money itself.

As families across the country gathered for Christmas celebrations, one ticket holder in Arkansas unknowingly unwrapped the ultimate holiday surprise — a jackpot that will change generations.
