Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) shares slipped around 4% to $15.98 on Thursday after the electric vehicle maker revealed pricing and trim details for its highly anticipated R2 midsize electric SUV. While the new EV lineup aims directly at Tesla’s Model Y, investors appeared disappointed after Rivian confirmed that the most affordable $45,000 version of the vehicle will not arrive until late 2027.
The R2 is considered one of the most important products in Rivian’s future lineup. The company is hoping the vehicle will significantly expand its customer base by bringing Rivian’s adventure-focused design, technology, and electric performance to a lower price point compared with its premium R1 models.
Rivian reveals R2 SUV lineup and pricing
Rivian introduced several trims for the R2 SUV, starting with the top-end Performance model and moving down to more affordable versions that will arrive in stages over the next two years.
The most powerful version is the R2 Performance with Launch Package, which starts at $57,990. This trim features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque. Rivian says the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 3.6 seconds while delivering an EPA-estimated range of around 330 miles.
The Launch Package also includes several additional perks such as lifetime access to Rivian’s Autonomy+ driver assistance subscription, a tow package rated at 4,400 pounds, and an exclusive Launch Green exterior color option.
Below the Performance trim sits the R2 Premium, which Rivian plans to launch in late 2026 with a starting price of $53,990. This model also comes with dual-motor all-wheel drive but produces 450 horsepower and 537 lb-ft of torque. Despite slightly lower performance, Rivian says the Premium trim will still offer an estimated range of 330 miles and a 0-to-60 mph time of about 4.6 seconds.
Cheapest Rivian R2 coming later than expected
The entry-level R2 Standard version will arrive later than the higher trims. Rivian says this variant will begin deliveries in the first half of 2027 with a starting price of $48,490. The Standard model features a single rear-motor setup generating 350 horsepower and offers the longest estimated range in the lineup at up to 345 miles.
Rivian also confirmed that an even cheaper version of the R2 will launch later in 2027 with a starting price around $45,000. This model is expected to feature a smaller battery pack and deliver approximately 265 miles of range, though Rivian has not yet released full specifications for that variant.
The timeline means buyers hoping to purchase the most affordable Rivian R2 may have to wait nearly two years before deliveries begin.
Interior design and features
Rivian says the R2 will feature premium interior materials and design themes similar to its flagship models. The Performance and Premium trims will include birchwood accents and upgraded materials across two interior styles called Black Crater and Coastal Cloud.
The Standard trim will offer a simplified Black Crater interior with natural fiber accents while still maintaining the minimalist technology and design language Rivian has become known for.
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the R2 incorporates lessons learned from the company’s first-generation vehicles.
“R2 embodies so many of our learnings,” Scaringe said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more excited about what this vehicle represents for Rivian’s future.”
Competition with Tesla’s Model Y
Rivian is positioning the R2 as a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model Y, currently the best-selling electric vehicle in the United States. Tesla’s Model Y rear-wheel-drive version starts at $39,990, which is significantly cheaper than Rivian’s entry-level R2 Standard model.
However, Tesla’s Model Y all-wheel-drive Premium version starts around $48,990, which places it closer in price to Rivian’s R2 Premium trim priced at $53,990.
The battle between the two vehicles will likely come down to brand loyalty, performance features, and design preferences. Rivian has built a reputation for rugged, adventure-focused vehicles, while Tesla continues to dominate the EV market through production scale and charging infrastructure.

Reservations already open
Despite the long timeline for some trims, Rivian has already opened reservations for the R2 with a refundable deposit of $100. The company is hoping early reservations will help gauge demand and build excitement ahead of the vehicle’s production launch.
The R2 will also be displayed publicly during SXSW 2026 from March 13 to March 18, giving potential buyers and industry analysts an opportunity to see the new electric SUV up close.
The reveal comes at a critical moment for Rivian. The company is still working to scale production, improve margins, and compete against larger automakers entering the EV market.
What the R2 means for Rivian’s future
The R2 represents Rivian’s biggest opportunity to move beyond niche premium vehicles and reach a broader segment of EV buyers. If successful, the model could dramatically increase Rivian’s sales volume and strengthen its position in the global electric vehicle market.
However, the delayed timeline for the cheapest version shows that Rivian still faces the complex challenges of scaling EV production while keeping costs under control.
For now, investors appear cautious. Rivian stock slipped following the announcement as traders reacted to the later-than-expected timeline for the most affordable model.
Still, the R2 could ultimately become Rivian’s most important vehicle yet. If the SUV successfully competes with Tesla’s Model Y and attracts new customers to the brand, it may play a key role in shaping Rivian’s long-term growth story in the electric vehicle market.
