A fire burning through thick wetland vegetation at Herdsman Lake has put several inner Perth suburbs on alert, sending smoke across the area and forcing emergency crews to tackle flames in difficult terrain just kilometres from the city centre.

The blaze was first reported around 10:30am on Monday on the eastern side of Herdsman Lake, roughly 6 kilometres from Perth’s CBD. Despite relatively mild autumn weather, the fire spread through dense reeds and bushland, highlighting how quickly conditions can shift even outside peak fire season.

Authorities issued an advice-level alert for residents in Glendalough, Osborne Park and Wembley, warning that while the fire is currently contained, it is not yet fully controlled. Of particular concern are embers being carried by wind into nearby residential areas.

Smoke and ember risk spreads beyond fire zone

Although the fire itself remains within the wetland, its impact has extended into surrounding suburbs. A large plume of smoke has been visible across parts of Perth, reducing air quality and prompting health concerns among residents.

Authorities have emphasised that embers pose the biggest threat in this situation. Carried by wind, they can travel beyond the main fire front and ignite spot fires in nearby neighbourhoods. Residents have been advised to stay alert, particularly those living close to bushland areas.

People experiencing heavy smoke conditions are encouraged to remain indoors, close windows and limit outdoor activity. This is especially important for individuals with respiratory conditions, children and older residents.

The fire has already burnt approximately 20 hectares, and while it is currently contained, crews continue to monitor conditions closely. Firefighters are working to strengthen containment lines and prevent further spread, particularly as winds shift throughout the day.
