A2 Milk Company is facing one of its biggest reputation tests in recent months after a voluntary infant formula recall in the United States triggered a sharp sell-off in its shares. The stock dropped as much as 18% after the company confirmed that three batches of its A2 Platinum Premium USA infant formula were being recalled due to the detection of cereulide, a toxin linked to foodborne illness.
The recall affects formula sold only in the United States, but the news quickly drew global attention because infant nutrition is a highly sensitive category where consumer trust can shift fast. The concern is linked to cereulide, a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. Symptoms from cereulide exposure can appear quickly, usually within 30 minutes to six hours. They may include nausea and vomiting.
