Motorcyclist Seriously Injured After Motorcycle Gets Stuck on Traffic Light in Delta

A Saturday afternoon crash in North Delta left a motorcyclist seriously injured and created an unusual scene above one of the area’s busiest intersections, where the motorcycle ended up lodged on an overhead traffic signal after colliding with another vehicle.

Delta police said officers were called just before 3 p.m. to the 7100 block of Scott Road, near 72nd Avenue and 120th Street, after a two-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle and a sedan. The crash happened close to the Surrey-Delta border, a heavily travelled corridor used by commuters, transit traffic and local drivers throughout the day.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police described the injuries as non-life-threatening, while confirming that the driver of the other vehicle was not hurt.

What made the crash stand out was the position of the motorcycle after impact. Images from the scene showed the damaged bike hanging high above the intersection from the traffic light structure, while the sedan remained below with visible damage. The unusual sight quickly drew attention from drivers passing through the area and later spread across social media.

Emergency crews closed Scott Road between 70th Avenue and 72nd Avenue while they worked to secure the scene, remove the motorcycle from the signal structure and clear debris from the roadway. The closure caused heavy delays around 72nd Avenue, with traffic backing up as vehicles were forced away from the crash site.

Police, firefighters and recovery crews remained at the intersection as the damaged vehicles were removed and the area was made safe for traffic again. The work was complicated by the motorcycle’s position above the roadway, requiring crews to carefully bring it down without creating further risk to responders or nearby infrastructure.

Delta police continue crash investigation

Police have not yet said what caused the collision. Investigators are expected to review the position of both vehicles, damage at the scene, road conditions, witness accounts and any available dashcam or surveillance video from nearby traffic.

No charges have been announced. The identity of the injured rider has not been released.

The crash happened at a busy intersection where Scott Road, also known as 120th Street, carries traffic along the boundary area between Delta and Surrey. The stretch around 72nd Avenue is known for steady vehicle movement, turning traffic and congestion during peak travel periods.

Motorcycle crashes can be especially dangerous because riders have far less protection than people inside cars or trucks. Even when a rider is wearing a helmet and protective clothing, a collision with a larger vehicle can lead to serious injuries because of the force of impact and the risk of being thrown from the bike.

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia advises drivers to take extra care around motorcycles, especially at intersections, where visibility, turning decisions and lane changes can quickly become dangerous.

Saturday’s crash also caused concern among local residents and drivers because of how dramatically the motorcycle came to rest above the road. While serious crashes often leave debris scattered across lanes, it is rare for a vehicle to become lodged on traffic signal equipment. That unusual detail made the incident widely shared, but police have focused on the rider’s condition and the ongoing investigation.

Traffic on Scott Road was blocked in both directions between 70th Avenue and 72nd Avenue while crews handled the cleanup. Nearby 72nd Avenue also became heavily congested as drivers tried to move around the closure. Police urged motorists to avoid the area until the scene was cleared.

The crash is another reminder of the risks motorcyclists face on urban roads, particularly at busy intersections where a single missed check or sudden movement can have severe consequences. Drivers are encouraged to look twice for motorcycles before turning, changing lanes or entering an intersection, while riders are urged to remain visible and cautious around vehicles that may not see them in time.

Swikblog has recently covered several serious road incidents involving motorcycles and major traffic disruption, including a Mitchell Freeway crash in Perth that left a motorcyclist seriously injured and a Monash Freeway crash where a rider was airlifted after a multi-vehicle collision.

Anyone who saw the Delta crash or has dashcam footage from Scott Road near 72nd Avenue shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday may be able to assist investigators as police continue working to determine exactly how the collision happened.

The investigation remains ongoing.
