Apple Watch Ultra 4 is starting to look like more than a normal yearly refresh. A fresh supply-chain report suggests Apple is preparing its first major Ultra redesign since 2022, while also upgrading the health sensor system that sits at the center of the device’s fitness and wellness appeal.
The latest claim comes from DigiTimes, cited by 9to5Mac, which says Apple’s next high-end smartwatch will bring a “full redesign” and a “significant upgrade to sensing functions.” The same report adds that market watchers expect the changes to lift Apple Watch Ultra shipments by 20% to 30% compared with the previous model.
That would be a major shift for the Ultra line. Apple introduced the first Apple Watch Ultra in September 2022 with a rugged titanium case, larger display, Action Button and a design clearly built for runners, divers, hikers and outdoor users. Since then, the product has improved, but it has not changed dramatically from the outside.
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 arrived in 2023 with a brighter screen and performance improvements. In 2024, Apple kept the hardware mostly unchanged and added a black titanium color option. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 in 2025 was also viewed as a smaller update, with 5G support among its more notable additions. That history is why the Ultra 4 redesign rumor stands out.
Why the Apple Watch Ultra 4 redesign matters
Apple has not revealed what the new design will look like, and the current report does not mention exact changes to the case, bezels, display size or button layout. Still, a “full redesign” would give Apple a chance to fix some long-running complaints around the Ultra’s bulk, comfort and daily wearability.
The current Ultra design is loved by many outdoor users, but it can feel large for people with smaller wrists or those who want a watch that works better with formal clothing. A thinner body, refined display edges, lighter materials or a more balanced case could make the Ultra 4 more attractive to buyers who liked the features but avoided the size.
The bigger story may be on the back of the watch. DigiTimes previously reported that Apple was preparing to double the number of sensors in a future Ultra model. The new report again points to a major sensing upgrade, though it does not name the exact sensors Apple plans to add.
For users, this could mean more accurate health and workout readings rather than one dramatic new medical feature. Better heart-rate tracking, improved blood oxygen data, stronger sleep insights, more reliable recovery metrics and sharper hypertension alerts are all realistic possibilities. These upgrades would matter most during exercise, sleep tracking and long outdoor sessions where small measurement errors can affect the usefulness of the data.

There is also an efficiency angle. More advanced sensors do not only help collect more information; they can also help collect cleaner data using less power. That could support better battery life, a key reason many buyers choose the Ultra instead of the regular Apple Watch.
The report highlights Taiwan-Asia Semiconductor Corporation, or TASC, as an important Apple sensor supplier. Large-volume orders are expected from July, which fits Apple’s usual production ramp before a September launch window.
Some users may hope these new sensors mean blood glucose monitoring or real blood pressure measurement is finally coming. That still looks unlikely for 2026. Apple has worked on advanced glucose and blood pressure technology for years, but current reporting suggests the Ultra 4 is more likely to improve existing health tracking than introduce a full medical-grade replacement for dedicated devices.
The timing also fits Apple’s wider premium-device push. Swikblog recently covered the iPhone 18 Pro Max battery and camera upgrade rumors, another sign that Apple may be focusing heavily on high-end products with stronger hardware differences.
For now, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 leak should be treated as unofficial. Supply-chain reports can be useful, especially for parts and production timing, but Apple can still change final features before launch. Even so, the direction is clear: if the redesign, sensor upgrade and efficiency improvements arrive together, Ultra 4 could become the first Apple Watch Ultra in years that feels like a true next-generation model.
Apple is expected to announce its next Apple Watch lineup alongside new iPhones in September 2026.
