Man Saves Pound Dog — Days Later the Dog Saves Him From Deadly House Fire

A rescue dog adopted just three days earlier is being hailed as a hero after saving her new owner from a deadly house fire in Whakatāne, New Zealand.

The early-morning blaze broke out at a property on Bridge Street on Friday, with flames quickly engulfing the home while the man inside was still asleep. According to witnesses, the fire had already become intense by the time emergency crews arrived.

Nearby shop owner Pawik Patel said he was alerted to the fire shortly before 7am after a customer rushed into his store. When he stepped outside, he saw large flames coming from the property and immediately called emergency services before running toward the scene.

“By the time I got there, it was too big,” Patel told local media.

The man living at the property managed to escape safely, but only after being woken up by Hazel — a 9-month-old rescue dog he had adopted from the pound just days earlier.

Property manager Christina Eichler said the dog bit the sleeping owner to wake him as smoke filled the house.

“His dog actually bit him and woke him up. If his dog wasn’t there, he wouldn’t be here,” Eichler said.

The man suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to Whakatāne Hospital in moderate condition by Hato Hone St John ambulance crews. Fortunately, his children were not staying at the home at the time of the fire.

Dog rescued from abandonment becomes a lifesaver

Hazel’s story has touched many people because the young dog had already experienced multiple rejections before finally finding a permanent home.

Dora Motateanu from JDC Rescue said Hazel had been abandoned twice despite having a calm and affectionate nature. Earlier this week, the rescue organisation described her online as “the most gentle and loving girl you could ever meet” and “a genuine treasure”.

After being rescued as a puppy, Hazel was adopted once before being abandoned again when a former owner reportedly decided to change lifestyles.

The Whakatāne man adopted Hazel only three days ago in an effort to save her from returning to the pound system. In a remarkable twist, Hazel ended up saving his life instead.

“This is why we do this,” Motateanu said. “Those moments when we see dogs finding their families.”

Fire destroys home as investigation continues

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said five fire crews battled the blaze after arriving to find the home fully ablaze. A fire investigator later remained at the scene to determine the cause.

Police said they had not yet established whether the fire was suspicious.

Local resident Gary Thomas, who captured video footage of the burning house, said the incident was a powerful reminder about fire safety and the importance of working smoke alarms in homes. Fire safety advice is available through the official Fire and Emergency New Zealand website.

The family lost nearly all their possessions in the fire, and local supporters have since begun collecting clothing donations for the adults and children affected.

For Hazel’s new owner, the house can eventually be rebuilt. But thanks to one rescue dog’s instincts, his life was not lost in the flames.
