Toyota Recall Shock: 17,000 Vehicles in Canada Face Engine Failure Risk

Toyota has issued a fresh recall in Canada covering nearly 17,000 vehicles after a possible engine manufacturing problem raised concerns about sudden power loss while driving. The recall affects certain Toyota and Lexus models, including the Toyota Tundra pickup and two Lexus SUVs, the GX 550 and LX 600.

The issue centres on engines that may not have been manufactured correctly. According to Transport Canada, metal debris left inside the engine could damage the crankshaft bearings. These bearings play a critical role in keeping the engine’s rotating parts moving smoothly. If they fail, the engine may run poorly, lose power, or stall completely.

That is why the recall is being treated as a safety concern rather than a routine service update. If an engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, the driver could suddenly lose power to the wheels. In real-world driving, that kind of failure can be especially dangerous in fast-moving traffic, on highways, while merging, or when towing or carrying heavy loads.

Models named in the Toyota Canada recall

The affected vehicles listed in the recall include the 2024 Lexus GX 550, the 2023 and 2024 Lexus LX 600, and Toyota Tundra models from the 2023 and 2024 model years. The recall does not automatically mean every vehicle from those years is affected, so owners should check their vehicle identification number, commonly known as the VIN.

  • 2024 Lexus GX 550
  • 2023–2024 Lexus LX 600
  • 2023–2024 Toyota Tundra

Transport Canada also said this latest recall replaces an earlier recall that covered nearly 14,000 Toyota vehicles in November. The updated action now brings the total number of affected vehicles to almost 17,000, suggesting the scope of the concern has widened after further review.

Toyota has not yet finalized the repair process. The federal agency said corrective actions are still under development, and owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail. Until then, drivers should monitor official recall updates and avoid ignoring any unusual engine symptoms.

Warning signs may include rough engine performance, knocking sounds, dashboard warning lights, reduced acceleration, difficulty starting, or sudden loss of power. However, mechanical problems linked to internal debris may not always show clear early symptoms, which makes a VIN check important even if the vehicle appears to be running normally.

What owners should do now

Owners of the affected Toyota and Lexus vehicles should check their VIN through Toyota Canada, Lexus Canada, or the official government recall database. Drivers should also make sure their mailing address is updated with the manufacturer so they receive the official recall letter when it is sent.

If a recalled vehicle begins showing engine problems before the repair is available, owners should contact a Toyota or Lexus dealer immediately. Continuing to drive a vehicle with possible engine bearing damage could increase the risk of a breakdown or sudden stall.

The recall comes at a time when vehicle safety notices are receiving greater attention from drivers, especially when they involve major components such as engines, brakes, airbags, or seat systems. Toyota has faced other large recall actions in recent months, including a separate Swikblog report on a Toyota Highlander recall affecting more than 550,000 SUVs.

For Canadian drivers, the most important step is simple: check the VIN, watch for Toyota’s official mail notice, and speak with a dealer if the vehicle is included. A recall does not always mean the engine will fail, but it does mean the risk has been serious enough for regulators and the automaker to act before more drivers are exposed to a possible safety hazard.
