Costco Recall Alert: Window Shades Sold in Canada Pose Choking Hazard to Children

Costco customers in Canada are being asked to check a window shade product sold online after a new recall warned that small parts could detach and create a choking hazard for young children.

The recall involves Bali Springs Cellular Shades, model number BC23, sold through Costco.ca from January 1, 2025, to April 9, 2026. The safety notice says the problem is linked to the bottom rail of the shades, where end caps may not have been properly glued. If those parts come loose, they can release small pieces that may be dangerous for infants or young children.

According to the official Health Canada recall notice, the recalled shades do not meet Canada’s Corded Window Coverings Regulations. Health Canada said the hazard is not only about the shade cord system but also about detachable components that could become a choking risk inside the home.

Customers can check whether their product is affected by looking at the label on the top of the headrail. The label includes the model number and manufacturing date. For Costco shoppers, the key model listed in the notice is BC23.

Health Canada’s broader recall notice also names other Springs Window Fashions cellular shade models, including Graber Cellular Shade GC23, Springs Cellular Shade SC19, and Signature Series Cellular Shade SSC23. Costco’s notice focuses on the Bali Springs Cellular Shades sold through its Canadian website.

As of May 19, 2026, the company had not received any reports of injuries or incidents in Canada. Even so, customers are being told not to ignore the warning, especially in homes where young children may touch or play near window coverings.

Anyone with the recalled product should stop using it immediately if the end caps on the bottom rail are loose or not securely attached. Springs Window Fashions says customers can contact the company for support. If an end cap has detached, the vendor will provide a glue kit with instructions. Customers may also return the affected shades to Costco.ca for a full refund.

The notice comes after several recent recalls involving products sold by Costco in Canada, including a kettle, multivitamins, shampoo, and conditioner. Swikblog also recently reported on another Costco-related recall involving Zwilling electric kettles recalled over burn injury concerns.

For parents and caregivers, the practical step is simple: inspect the shade label, check the bottom rail, and keep children away from the product until the recall instructions are followed. Recalls involving small detachable parts can seem minor at first, but they matter because a loose piece can quickly become a serious risk in a child’s reach.
