Florida Mom Arrested at Airport After Allegedly Leaving 4 Kids Home Alone for Vegas Trip

KISSIMMEE, Florida, October 27, 2026 — A Florida mother was arrested at Orlando International Airport after allegedly leaving her four children home alone during a five-night work trip to Las Vegas. Deputies discovered the situation after a 9-year-old boy suffered a head injury, prompting an emergency 911 call from one of his siblings.

Irene Miller, 50, a photographer from Kissimmee, faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. Her children, ages 9, 11, 12 and 14, reportedly received daytime visits from a babysitter but had no adult staying overnight.

The injured boy was treated at a hospital and released. All four children are now in their father’s care.

911 Call Exposes Children’s Living Situation

The investigation began shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, when a child called emergency services after a dumbbell reportedly fell on her younger brother’s head.

Deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to the family’s residence on Parkway Boulevard in Kissimmee, where they found four siblings without an adult present.

The 9-year-old was transported to Celebration Hospital, treated and subsequently discharged. Authorities did not report serious injuries to the other children.

Investigators contacted Miller by telephone and learned she was working in Las Vegas, thousands of miles from her Florida home.

Las Vegas Trip and Babysitter Arrangement

Miller reportedly departed Florida on Sunday, October 18, and planned to return Friday, October 23.

According to deputies, she arranged for a babysitter from Tampa to visit the children before and after school.

The babysitter reportedly helped them prepare for school in the mornings and checked on them afterward. However, investigators said no adult stayed overnight during Miller’s absence.

Authorities have not publicly established how long the babysitter remained at the residence each day or whether additional relatives provided assistance.

The distinction between occasional childcare visits and continuous overnight supervision is central to the allegations.

Mother Arrested After Returning to Orlando Airport

Following the emergency, deputies contacted the children’s father, who agreed to take all four siblings to his residence.

Detectives waited for Miller’s return flight on October 23 and approached her on the jet bridge at Orlando International Airport.

Body-camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows officers escorting Miller through the airport before taking her into custody.

She was booked into Orange County Jail on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.

Sheriff Responds as Mother Faces Four Charges

Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon emphasized that his department takes suspected child neglect seriously and will investigate cases involving inadequate supervision.

According to News 6 Orlando’s reporting on the investigation, deputies identified the overnight childcare arrangement as a major concern.

The charges involve all four children. The phrase “without great bodily harm” describes the criminal allegations and does not mean the 9-year-old suffered no injury.

Miller is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Florida Child Neglect Law and Overnight Supervision

Florida law evaluates child neglect based on whether a caregiver failed to provide necessary care or supervision under circumstances involving legally significant harm or risk.

There is no single statewide minimum age that automatically determines whether every instance of leaving a child home alone is lawful. The children’s ages, maturity, duration of absence and emergency arrangements can matter.

In this case, investigators focused on a multiday absence involving younger children without an adult staying overnight.

The arrest comes amid broader attention to law-enforcement investigations, including a separate Tennessee prison escape case and an Elizabeth, New Jersey, shooting investigation.

Children’s Condition and Latest Court Developments

Authorities confirmed that the injured boy received hospital treatment and was released. His three siblings were also placed with their father.

Subsequent reporting indicated that Miller had posted bond following her arrest. However, a confirmed next court date, plea and detailed response from her attorney were not established in the available reports.

The investigation has raised questions about childcare responsibilities during extended parental travel, but the criminal allegations remain subject to court proceedings.
