Aaron Donald is coming out of retirement and returning to the Los Angeles Rams, setting up a blockbuster partnership with Myles Garrett as the franchise pushes for another Super Bowl. How Aaron Donald’s $20 million Rams deal works
The $20 million headline figure is only part of Donald’s contract. The deal reportedly carries a $10 million base salary plus a $666,667 bonus for each game he is on the Rams’ 53-man roster, available for up to 15 games.
Donald can then earn another $10 million through incentives largely tied to Los Angeles’ postseason performance.
A reported $2.5 million is available if the Rams make the playoffs and Donald plays at least 15% of the regular-season defensive snaps. He can earn another $1.25 million for being active in the wild-card round, or if Los Angeles receives a bye, and $1.25 million for the divisional round.
Winning the NFC Championship with Donald meeting the required playing-time threshold would add $2.5 million. Another $2.5 million is available if the Rams win the Super Bowl and Donald plays at least 20% of the defensive snaps in the game.
That means Donald reaching the full $30 million would ultimately require the Rams to win the Super Bowl.
Why Aaron Donald decided to return
Donald’s comeback had been developing throughout the summer rather than emerging as a last-minute signing.
The possibility gained momentum when Rams coach Sean McVay contacted Donald while Los Angeles was exploring its trade for Garrett. By training camp, McVay said Donald was following a strict training program similar to his routine as an active player to see how his body responded.
Donald then worked out with the Rams in August. His first session appeared on the NFL transaction wire as a tryout because he used team equipment, and Los Angeles reported another tryout later in the month.
