Tasmania Police have charged a 34-year-old Launceston-area man with serious drug and firearm offences after allegedly finding about one kilogram of cocaine during a traffic stop on the Bass Highway near Deloraine.
The arrest led investigators to search a residential property, where police allege they found drug-related evidence, ammunition and a stolen firearm linked to an earlier aggravated burglary in Beaconsfield.
How the Bass Highway traffic stop unfolded
Officers observed a vehicle allegedly being driven erratically at about 8:45am on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, according to an official Tasmania Police statement.
Police intercepted the vehicle near Deloraine and searched it. Officers allegedly discovered approximately one kilogram of cocaine concealed inside a bag.
The driver was taken into custody. Police have not released his name or disclosed the precise location of the stop.
What police allegedly found during the property search
Investigators later executed a search warrant at a residential property. Police said the search uncovered evidence connected to drug offences, a quantity of ammunition and a stolen firearm.
The address of the property, the firearm type and the amount of ammunition have not been made public. Authorities have likewise not said whether cash, phones or drug-packaging equipment were seized.
Alleged connection to a Beaconsfield burglary
Police allege the recovered firearm is linked to an aggravated burglary reported in Beaconsfield earlier in 2026. Beaconsfield is a town in northern Tasmania, about 40 kilometres north-west of Launceston.
No details have been released about when or where the burglary occurred or how investigators connected the weapon to that case. The alleged link does not establish that the accused was involved in the burglary.

Tasmania Police said the man was charged with serious drug and firearm offences but did not publish the individual charges. He was detained to appear in Launceston Magistrates Court on Thursday, July 23.
