Christmas Lights Switch-On at 5:30pm
Birmingham Lord Mayor Councillor Zaker Choudhry and German Ambassador Susanne Baumann are scheduled to switch on the festive lights in Victoria Square at 5:30pm Thursday.
The ceremony celebrates Birmingham’s longstanding partnership with Frankfurt and marks the market’s 26th consecutive edition.
42 Stalls, German Food and Christmas Shopping
Visitors can enjoy bratwurst, schnitzel, pretzels, stollen, crepes, German beer and traditional glĂĽhwein. Wooden stalls also offer handcrafted decorations, jewellery, toys and Christmas gifts.
Some older tourism guides advertise more than 80 stalls, but opening-day reporting identifies 42 decorated stalls for 2026.
Food prices vary between traders, and a complete verified 2026 price list is unavailable. Some drinks require a refundable deposit for reusable mugs or glasses.

New Street Roadworks Change Market Layout
Roadworks on Bennetts Hill and Temple Street mean there will be no stalls between Nando’s and the Apple Store on New Street.
The market continues around Victoria Square and beyond Corporation Street, with craft stalls also located along High Street.
Police Issue Warning to Christmas Market Visitors
West Midlands Police confirmed additional plain-clothes and covert patrols ahead of the market’s opening.
Officers will be supported by police dogs, drones and CCTV operators to deter criminal activity and reassure visitors.
Neighbourhood Policing Manager Ellis Turner urged people to secure valuables, remain alert and keep an eye on friends and family.
The measures are precautionary; police have not announced a specific threat to the event. Suspicious activity should be reported to officers or security staff.
Ice Rink, Big Wheel and Live Entertainment
The ice rink and big wheel return to Centenary Square from November 5 until January 3, 2027. Both attractions require separate paid tickets, unlike the free Christmas market.
German and Birmingham musicians will perform during weekday lunchtimes and evenings, with additional weekend entertainment.
A new Monday talent showcase will give emerging performers an opportunity to secure prominent December appearances.
The Christmas market is part of a busy festive entertainment season across the UK, with major events such as the Capital Jingle Bell Ball 2026 also attracting visitors during the holiday period.
Travel, Parking and Accessibility
Birmingham New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill railway stations are within walking distance. Visitors can also use buses, Metro trams, Lime bikes and e-scooters.
Drivers should check Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone requirements, as charges may apply to some vehicles.
Step-free routes, accessible toilets near Victoria Square and designated Blue Badge parking are available. Dogs must remain on leads.
Weekday afternoons and Sunday evenings are generally quieter, while Friday and Saturday evenings attract larger crowds.
