Traffic ground to a halt on Queensland’s busiest north–south corridor on Thursday after an excavator slammed into an overpass on the Bruce Highway, ripping concrete from the bridge and forcing the closure of multiple lanes on the Sunshine Coast.

The dramatic bridge strike occurred at Tanawha just before 9am when a truck transporting an excavator struck the Ilkley Road overpass, which has a posted clearance of 5.4 metres. The impact caused the excavator to fall onto the roadway below, scattering debris across southbound lanes and damaging the underside of the bridge structure.
Large chunks of concrete were left strewn across the highway, alongside wreckage from the low loader and heavy machinery. Images from the scene showed visible cracks and missing sections beneath the bridge, prompting immediate safety concerns and a full engineering assessment.
Queensland Police confirmed the crash was serious, shutting down all southbound traffic near Tanawha and warning motorists to expect major delays. Diversions were put in place via Tanawha Tourist Drive and Maroochydore Road, while drivers were urged to avoid the area altogether where possible.
Northbound lanes were reopened later in the morning under traffic control, with one lane temporarily being used to relieve southbound congestion. Despite these measures, traffic remained at a standstill for hours, stretching from Tanawha through to Rosemount as peak-hour pressure intensified.
Emergency services including police, ambulance crews and fire and rescue units attended the scene. Paramedics assessed the truck driver and the occupant of another vehicle involved in the incident, but authorities confirmed no serious injuries were reported and no patients required hospitalisation.
Engineers from the Department of Transport were deployed to assess the structural integrity of the Ilkley Road bridge. Officials said inspections would focus on damage to the support framework beneath the overpass, with reopening dependent on safety findings. No timeline has yet been provided for the full reopening of southbound lanes.
Bridge strikes involving over-height vehicles continue to be a recurring issue on major highways, often causing widespread disruption even when injuries are avoided. Authorities have repeatedly warned operators to double-check load heights, particularly on routes with low-clearance overpasses.
Live traffic conditions and official updates continued throughout the day, with motorists advised to monitor trusted sources such as ABC News Australia for the latest information on closures and diversions.
With the Bruce Highway acting as a critical transport artery for the Sunshine Coast, authorities are urging drivers to remain patient, allow extra travel time, and follow detour signage as crews work to make the bridge safe again.
