Deadly Chicago Weekend: 2 Killed, 7 Hurt in Shootings Across the City

CHICAGO — Two people were killed and seven others wounded in seven separate shootings across Chicago from Friday evening into early Sunday, according to police, with victims ranging in age from 15 to 37.

The weekend violence included two fatal shootings, a triple shooting that wounded two teenagers and a 37-year-old woman, and an early-Sunday gunfight in which one wounded man was taken into custody.

The tally remained preliminary Sunday morning because the reporting period runs through 5 a.m. Monday, meaning the final weekend total could still change.

33-year-old killed after South Halsted Street fight

The first fatal shooting happened at about 4:34 p.m. Saturday in the 11500 block of South Halsted Street.

Police said a 33-year-old man became involved in an argument with a group that escalated into a fight. Someone then opened fire, striking him in the chest.

The victim made his own way to Roseland Hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead. No arrest was announced in the initial police account.

Three wounded, including two teenagers, on South Campbell

At around 6:58 p.m. Saturday, three people were shot while standing outside in the 7100 block of South Campbell Avenue.

Police said two men inside a light-colored sedan approached and fired multiple shots.

A 37-year-old woman was shot in the head, right hand and left wrist and taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the neck and grazed in the chest, while a 17-year-old girl was shot in the right knee. Both teenagers were hospitalized in good condition.

The vehicle carrying the shooters fled southbound on Maplewood.

22-year-old killed in early-Sunday shooting

The second fatal attack happened at approximately 3:58 a.m. Sunday in the 4200 block of South Wentworth.

A 22-year-old man was sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle when two other vehicles pulled alongside, police said.

Multiple suspects from the vehicles then opened fire before fleeing. The victim was struck in the chest and shoulder and was later pronounced dead despite treatment from Chicago Fire Department personnel.

Four more shootings reported across the city

The weekend’s first shooting was reported just before 6:30 p.m. Friday in the 4600 block of West Gladys Avenue. A 22-year-old man was shot once after being approached by a group and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

At 1:44 p.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man walking in the 4700 block of South Greenwood Avenue was shot in the left thigh. Police said the gunman fled on foot before entering a silver sedan.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, a 24-year-old man was shot in the 600 block of North Pulaski Road after an argument involving his girlfriend and another man. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition.

Another shooting followed at 1:51 a.m. in the 1300 block of West Randolph Street.

Police said a fight that began inside a business moved outside, where two men allegedly exchanged gunfire. A 29-year-old man suffered graze wounds to both arms, his jaw and abdomen.

Officers took him into custody after identifying him as having fired a weapon. A handgun was recovered, and police said charges were pending.

Nine victims across seven separate shootings

By Sunday morning, the preliminary count stood at nine shooting victims: two dead and seven wounded.

The victims were 15, 17, 19, 22, 22, 24, 29, 33 and 37 years old. Police have not said the seven incidents are connected.

The violence comes amid several recent criminal investigations across the U.S. Readers following similar developing cases can see the latest details from the Minneapolis shooting investigation and the separate Houma stabbing case involving Kaegan Solet.

Police investigations continue

No arrests had been announced in the other shootings described in the weekend tally.

Residents with information about any of the incidents can check official alerts or submit tips through the Chicago Police Department.

Because the weekend reporting window had not yet closed when the figures were released Sunday morning, police could revise the total as additional incidents or updated victim conditions are reported.
