Netflixâs live-action Scooby-Doo: Origins has wrapped filming, bringing the franchiseâs new origin story one step closer to its planned 2027 debut. The eight-episode series will introduce younger versions of Shaggy, Daphne, Velma and Fred â while a real Great Dane takes on the role of Scooby-Doo in a major change from earlier live-action adaptations.

Filming took place in Georgia after production began in April 2026. With principal photography now complete, the series moves into post-production as Netflix prepares the mystery adventure for release. The streamer has confirmed a 2027 premiere window, but no exact date has been announced.
Filming wraps after months of production in Georgia
Scooby-Doo: Origins was filmed around the Atlanta area, with production based at Cinelease Studios in Conyers and additional work reported around Rutledge and nearby locations.
Those settings fit the showâs central summer-camp storyline. The production wrap means editing, sound, music, visual effects and other finishing work can now move forward before Netflix launches a broader promotional campaign.
The story begins before Mystery Inc. is formed
Rather than following an already established mystery-solving team, the new series explores how the group first comes together.
The story follows Shaggy and Daphne during their final summer at camp. Their plans change when they encounter a lonely Great Dane puppy tied to a disturbing mystery. Netflix says the puppy may have witnessed a supernatural murder.
Velma enters the story as a pragmatic, scientifically minded local, while Fred is introduced as a mysterious new arrival. As the case grows more dangerous, the four teenagers are drawn together and begin forming the team audiences know as Mystery Inc.
A real Great Dane will play Scooby-Doo
One of the biggest changes is Scooby himself. Netflix says a real Great Dane is being used to portray the character, a notable departure from previous live-action movies that relied heavily on CGI.
The streamer has already released an official first look at Scooby-Doo: Origins, showing the young dog with Scoobyâs familiar teal collar.
The decision gives the series a different visual identity while keeping one of the franchiseâs most recognizable characters at the center of the story.
The new Mystery Inc. cast
Mckenna Grace plays Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen plays Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson takes on Velma Dinkley and Maxwell Jenkins plays Fred Jones.
The supporting cast is also extensive. AndrĂŠ Benjamin, better known as AndrĂŠ 3000, is part of the ensemble alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Cathy Moriarty, Sara Gilbert, Bruce McGill, Rusty Schwimmer, Peter Macon, Maxwell Simkins, Jona Xiao and several others.
Netflix has kept a number of character details secret, which could be significant for a series built around a murder mystery.

Season 1 will run for eight episodes
Netflix ordered eight episodes for the first season. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as showrunners, writers and executive producers, while Toby Haynes directs the premiere episode and also serves as an executive producer.
Warner Bros. Television is producing the project. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and other established television producers are also involved.
The franchise is taking a different live-action route
Scooby-Doo has been a major entertainment franchise since Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! debuted in 1969. The characters have since appeared across animated series, movies and live-action films.
Unlike the 2002 theatrical movie, Origins is focused on the gang before they become an established team, giving the series more room to build their friendships and explain how their mystery-solving partnership develops.
Netflix is also revisiting other familiar entertainment properties, including the return of the original cast for The Inbetweeners 3, as streamers continue investing in recognizable franchises.
Netflix has confirmed 2027, but not the exact date
Filming may be finished, but the series still has months of post-production ahead. Netflix has confirmed that Scooby-Doo: Origins will arrive in 2027, though no month, day or full trailer date has been announced.
That means any specific release date circulating online should be treated as unofficial until Netflix confirms it.
Elsewhere in major franchise entertainment, audiences are also following developments around Hideo Kojimaâs Physint and its changing platform plans, highlighting how established names continue to drive attention across streaming, film and gaming.
For now, the key update is simple: the cast is in place, the real-life Scooby has been revealed, filming is complete and the new Mystery Inc. is officially heading toward Netflix in 2027.
