Why Salmonella matters for pets and people

Salmonella is a bacteria that can make animals sick if they eat contaminated food — and it can also infect humans who handle contaminated pet treats or touch surfaces exposed to them. The risk is higher if hands aren’t washed thoroughly after contact.

Possible symptoms in humans

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Fever

FDA notes symptoms often begin within hours to a few days; most recover without treatment, but severe illness can occur in some cases. FDA Salmonella overview.

Possible symptoms in pets

  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
  • Fever, reduced appetite, abdominal pain

Even if a dog appears healthy, it may still carry Salmonella and spread it to other animals or people.

What to do if you bought a recalled bag

  • Stop feeding the treats immediately.
  • Return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.
  • Wash your hands after handling the bag, treats, or pet feeding area.
  • Clean bowls and surfaces that may have touched the treats (soap and hot water).
  • If your pet has eaten the treats and becomes unwell, contact your veterinarian.
  • If you develop symptoms after handling the product, contact a healthcare provider.

The CDC also recommends careful handwashing and keeping pet food away from areas where human food is prepared: CDC pet food safety guidance.

Are illnesses confirmed?

At the time of the recall announcement, no illnesses had been reported in connection with the products. The contamination was detected during an FDA sampling program, and an investigation is ongoing.
