Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi – 7 December 2025

Max Verstappen may have crossed the finish line first at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but the biggest celebration of the night belonged to Lando Norris. By securing a crucial third-place finish, the McLaren driver achieved his lifelong dream and clinched the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, beating Verstappen to the title by just two points.

The official Formula 1 race report confirmed that Norris only needed a podium to seal the championship. Even with Verstappen’s flawless win and Oscar Piastri’s strong drive to second place, Norris held his nerve under immense pressure to secure the result that mattered most.

The nail-biting finale has been widely hailed as one of the most dramatic season enders of the decade, with analysts from BBC Sport calling Norris’s performance “a masterclass in composure, precision and mental steel”.

Grid Pressure: Norris Wedged Between Verstappen and Piastri

Norris began the race from second on the grid, directly between title rivals Verstappen and Piastri. The championship conditions were straightforward: finish in the top three and the world title was his. Anything lower, and Verstappen or Piastri could snatch it away.

Verstappen defended aggressively into Turn 1, forcing Norris to lift off. Moments later, Piastri executed a sweeping move around the outside at Turn 9, pushing Norris down to third. From that point on, the Brit had to execute a race of absolute discipline.

Wheel-to-Wheel Fighting and a Championship-Saving Podium

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc kept Norris under relentless pressure through the opening stint, while Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda provided one of the most intense battles of the race. Norris briefly ran off-track during a bold overtake attempt, but stewards later penalised Tsunoda for excessive defence—ultimately securing Norris’s critical P3 track position.

The second half of the race was all about damage limitation. Norris managed tyre degradation, fought through traffic after the pit stops, and avoided any unnecessary risks that could jeopardise his championship hopes. When the chequered flag waved, he crossed the line 16.5 seconds behind Verstappen— but it was enough.

Final Championship Maths: Norris Takes the Crown by Two Points

Verstappen’s win created a sizeable points swing, but not enough to topple Norris, whose consistency across the season paid off. Norris finished two points ahead of Verstappen, while Piastri ended the season 11 points further back in third.

It’s a deeply symbolic win for McLaren: their first drivers’ title since Lewis Hamilton in 2008, and the clearest proof yet of their full return to the sharp end of Formula One.

McLaren’s Road Back to Glory

The 2025 title marks a transformative moment for McLaren. Years of rebuilding under Zak Brown and Andrea Stella have finally crystallised into championship success. Norris, who chose loyalty over safer career moves, has now been rewarded with the sport’s ultimate prize.

The Abu Dhabi finale not only showcased Norris’s development into a complete driver—fast, calm, fearless— but also underlined McLaren’s status as genuine title contenders for the foreseeable future.
