Manchester City FC handed 20-year-old defender Max Alleyne his senior debut on Wednesday night as Pep Guardiola made five changes for the Premier League clash at the Etihad against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Recalled this month from a successful Championship loan with Watford, Alleyne was thrust straight into the starting XI following injuries to key defenders. The centre-back, son of former England cricketer Mark Alleyne, impressed for City’s Elite Development Squad last season and arrives with valuable first-team minutes after 16 league appearances at Vicarage Road.
City’s reshuffle saw Nathan Aké, Abdukodir Khusanov, Nico and Jeremy Doku also return to the lineup after Sunday’s 1–1 draw with Chelsea. Joško Gvardiol (fractured tibia) and Rúben Dias (hamstring) missed out, while Mateo Kovačić, John Stones, Savinho and Oscar Bobb remain sidelined. Rayan Aït-Nouri and Omar Marmoush were unavailable due to AFCON commitments.
Confirmed line-ups
City XI: Donnarumma; Nunes, Khusanov, Alleyne, Aké; Nico; Bernardo Silva (c), Reijnders; Foden, Doku; Erling Haaland
Subs: Trafford, Cherki, Rodri, O’Reilly, McAidoo, Mukasa, Lewis, Mfuni, R. Heskey
Brighton: Verbruggen; De Cuyper, Dunk (c), Van Hecke, Kadioglu; Gomez, Ayari, Hinshelwood; Gross, Mitoma, Georginio

Tactical snapshot
Guardiola lined City up with Donnarumma behind a back four of Nunes, Khusanov, Alleyne and Aké. Nico anchored midfield alongside Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders, while Haaland led the line with Phil Foden and Doku providing width—though City’s familiar in-game rotations were expected.
Why it matters
City entered the night unbeaten in 15 home league meetings with Brighton (12 wins, 3 draws), while the Seagulls arrived buoyed by a recent uptick in head-to-head form. Haaland has scored in each of his last four league games against Brighton, adding intrigue to a fixture that has recently tightened despite City’s dominant home run.
