The Kansas City Royals have acquired left-handed pitcher Matt Strahm from the Philadelphia Phillies, with right-hander Jonathan Bowlan heading to Philadelphia in return, the teams confirmed on Friday.
The move brings the 34-year-old Strahm back to the organisation where he began his Major League career, as Kansas City looks to add experienced depth and late-inning reliability to its bullpen ahead of the 2026 season.
Strahm spent the past two seasons with the Phillies, emerging as a versatile arm capable of handling high-leverage relief work and multi-inning outings. Despite occasional postseason struggles that drew fan criticism, underlying metrics continued to paint him as one of the more effective left-handed relievers in the league.
According to publicly available Statcast data from the 2025 season, Strahm ranked in the 94th percentile in expected ERA and expected batting average, while also placing in the 95th percentile in barrel rate, indicators that helped maintain his strong value on the trade market.
For Philadelphia, the deal brings in Bowlan, a right-handed pitcher who provides organisational depth and potential flexibility as the club continues to manage payroll and bullpen structure following consecutive deep postseason runs.
The trade was first reported by multiple outlets including MLB and later confirmed by both teams on social media, ending days of speculation around whether the Phillies would move a veteran reliever during the early offseason.
Kansas City officials did not immediately outline Strahm’s projected role, though he is expected to feature prominently in late-inning matchups against left-handed hitters while offering veteran leadership to a young pitching staff.
