Schools across Nova Scotia are closed today as crews work to clear heavy snowfall left behind by a powerful winter system that swept across the province overnight.
The low-pressure system tracked just south of the region from Wednesday into early Thursday, dumping more than 25 centimetres of snow in some communities and creating difficult road conditions across highways, side streets and school grounds.
All Regional School Centres Closed
All public schools in the following regional centres for education are closed today:
- Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education
- Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education
- Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education
- Conseil scolaire acadien provincial
- Halifax Regional Centre for Education
- South Shore Regional Centre for Education
- Strait Regional Centre for Education
- Tri-County Regional Centre for Education
Officials say the closures are necessary to allow road crews time to clear snow and address icy conditions, particularly on secondary roads and bus routes.
University Openings Delayed
Several post-secondary institutions have also adjusted their schedules due to the storm:
- Dalhousie University – Opening delayed until 10 a.m.
- Saint Mary’s University – Opening delayed until 10 a.m.
- Mount Saint Vincent University – Opening delayed until 10 a.m.
- St. Francis Xavier University – Opening at 2 p.m.
Administrators are urging students and staff to monitor official university channels for any further updates throughout the day.
Transit and Municipal Services Impacted
In the Halifax Regional Municipality, snow routes are currently in effect for Halifax Transit buses, which means vehicles may bypass certain residential streets to remain on plowed, priority corridors.
Solid waste collection scheduled for today has been postponed and rescheduled for February 26, according to municipal officials.
Drivers are being reminded to use caution, allow extra travel time, and keep a safe distance from snow-clearing equipment working across the province.
Snowfall Continues in Parts of the Province
Forecasters at Environment Canada say snowfall is expected to continue through the day in northern and western sections of Nova Scotia. Yellow snowfall warnings remain in effect in several areas as crews continue cleanup operations.
The storm marks one of the more significant winter weather events of the season so far, with widespread school cancellations and service disruptions reflecting the scale of accumulation overnight.
Officials will reassess road and campus conditions later today to determine whether normal operations can resume tomorrow.
