A bus rollover on Queenslandâs Bruce Highway has left 29 passengers needing assessment and treatment, including three people with life-threatening injuries, after a large coach overturned near Gumlu on Thursday afternoon.
The crash happened just before 4pm in North Queensland, on a stretch of the Bruce Highway between Townsville and Bowen. Emergency services were called to the scene as reports came through that a passenger coach had rolled over, prompting a major response from ambulance crews, police, firefighters and rescue aircraft.
Queensland Ambulance Service said 29 patients were treated at the crash site. Three people were in life-threatening condition, making the incident one of the most serious road emergencies reported in the region this year.
Nine patients were taken to Ayr Hospital, while another four were transferred to Bowen Hospital. Thirteen others were assessed by paramedics but were not expected to be transported to hospital because they were not injured, according to the information released by emergency officials.
The response was significant. QAS sent 11 crews and two rescue helicopters to Gumlu as paramedics worked to assess passengers, stabilise those seriously hurt and coordinate transfers from the highway scene to nearby hospitals.

Queensland Police arrived shortly after 4:30pm and closed the Bruce Highway in both directions while emergency crews worked around the overturned coach. Motorists were told to avoid the area or expect long delays, with traffic unable to move through the crash zone.
Pictures from the scene showed the large coach on its side near emergency workers in high-visibility gear. The crash created a difficult rescue environment, with responders needing to manage injured passengers, blocked traffic and a busy regional transport route at the same time.
The Bruce Highway is one of Queenslandâs most important road corridors, carrying local traffic, freight, tourism vehicles and long-distance passenger services through regional communities. A serious crash on this route can quickly disrupt movement across a wide area, especially in locations where detour options are limited.
