Reddit shares surged 11.5% in overnight trading after the social-media platform was selected to join the S&P 500, creating a major new catalyst for RDDT stock. The shares climbed from Thursday’s closing price of $158.12 to $176.31 overnight, an increase of $18.19. Reddit had already gained $4.67, or 3.04%, during regular trading.
The announcement matters because funds designed to track the S&P 500 will need to add Reddit shares when the change takes effect. That creates institutional demand tied to index rules, even though the company did not announce new earnings or a product launch.
When will Reddit join the S&P 500?
Reddit will enter the benchmark before US trading opens on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. RDDT will be classified in the Communication Services sector.
Reddit will replace AvalonBay Communities, which is being acquired by existing S&P 500 member Equity Residential. The combined property company is expected to be renamed Vivmark Residential and trade under the VMRK ticker.
The official index announcement confirms that Reddit’s addition will occur before the August 18 opening bell, subject to the expected completion of the AvalonBay transaction.
A separate index adjustment will put Sun Communities in the S&P MidCap 400 on August 20. It will replace Webster Financial, which is being acquired by Banco Santander.
Why RDDT stock jumped 11.5%
Index-tracking ETFs and mutual funds seek to reproduce the companies and weightings inside the S&P 500. When Reddit enters, those funds must obtain RDDT shares to keep their portfolios aligned with the benchmark.
Active managers measured against the index may also buy Reddit to avoid being underweight if the stock continues rising. This is often described as mechanical demand because the buying follows an index decision rather than a fresh assessment of Reddit’s business.
Investors using products such as the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF will gain indirect exposure to Reddit. The connection between index movements and ETFs is explained further in this look at how the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF moved with the market.
The total number of shares that funds will purchase was not disclosed. Reddit’s eventual weighting will depend largely on its float-adjusted market value, making unsupported estimates of index-related demand unreliable.
How Reddit qualified for the index
Reddit went public in March 2024. Its move into the benchmark little more than two years later marks an important shift from closely watched technology IPO to established large-cap company.
S&P 500 candidates must meet requirements involving market value, profitability, liquidity, public float and trading history. July 2026 guidelines placed the minimum market-capitalization requirement at $22.7 billion, although satisfying the published conditions does not guarantee selection.
Reddit was valued at approximately $30 billion around the announcement. It now becomes one of the few pure-play social-media businesses in the S&P 500 alongside Meta. Pinterest and Snap remain outside the index, while Twitter left public markets after its acquisition and was renamed X.
Revenue growth strengthens Reddit’s case
Reddit recently reported its eighth consecutive quarter of revenue growth above 60%. Advertising remains its main business, supported by investments in technology intended to help brands reach users across its topic-focused communities.
The company is also earning money from its archive of public discussions. Reddit has signed data-licensing agreements with Google and OpenAI, allowing its content to be used in connection with artificial-intelligence products and model development.
Its collection of conversations about products, travel, technology, finance and other specialist subjects is valuable because it contains natural language and real-world experiences. Investors, however, are still waiting to see whether Reddit can secure more agreements and turn AI licensing into a durable revenue stream.

Google AI traffic remains the central risk
The index announcement arrived less than three weeks after Reddit’s second-quarter results raised concerns about search traffic. Chief executive Steve Huffman said referrals from search were uneven and became more volatile later in the quarter.
Google’s Gemini-powered AI Overviews can answer questions directly on search-results pages. If users obtain enough information without visiting another website, Reddit may receive fewer clicks, limiting new-user acquisition, page views and advertising opportunities.
This creates a complicated AI relationship. Reddit can earn licensing revenue from its discussions, while AI-generated answers may reduce the traffic reaching those same discussions through Google.
Can Reddit stock continue rising?
RDDT’s overnight price of $176.31 remained below its previous high above $270. The stock had fallen approximately 31% in 2026 through Thursday’s close, so the 11.5% gain recovered only part of that decline.
The broader market may influence how much of the overnight jump survives. Investors can find more context in the factors that pushed the S&P 500 and Dow to record highs.
Volatility could remain elevated around August 18 as funds rebalance their portfolios. Stocks sometimes rise ahead of index admission and retreat after mandatory buying is completed, meaning inclusion does not guarantee further gains.
Once the index-related demand settles, Reddit’s performance will again depend on advertising growth, user engagement, profitability, international expansion and AI licensing. Its ability to attract users without relying heavily on Google search traffic will remain particularly important.
