Rivian is closing the gap in assisted driving, but Tesla still has a clear edge when the journey moves beyond straightforward highway cruising. A recent real-world comparison covering hundreds of miles found Rivian Autonomy+ increasingly polished as a hands-free driving system, while Tesla FSD (Supervised) remains better equipped for intersections, urban traffic and longer point-to-point journeys.
For Rivian, that gap could become much more important over the next year. The EV maker is preparing to push Autonomy+ beyond lane keeping and hands-free highway driving with Point-to-Point capability, designed to follow a route toward a selected destination while keeping the driver responsible for supervision. Rivian is targeting a limited rollout later in 2026 before expanding availability in 2027.
Tesla’s advantage becomes clearer on complicated roads
Rivian’s latest system looks increasingly comfortable on highways and well-marked roads. The difference becomes more noticeable once a trip involves traffic lights, roundabouts, construction, highway exits and busy city streets.
During a nearly 200-mile test through rural Michigan and downtown Ann Arbor, Tesla FSD navigated traffic signals, interchanges and exit ramps while also dealing with roundabouts, parking situations and construction zones. One of the more demanding moments involved a semitruck partially blocking a lane, another example of the unpredictable situations that separate basic highway assistance from broader supervised driving.
Rivian delivered a strong highway experience but still required the driver to intervene in some of those more complicated scenarios. Its current technology can identify traffic lights and stop signs, but recognition does not yet mean the vehicle will automatically stop or slow for them.
That is an important difference for buyers comparing the two systems. Tesla is already attempting a larger share of an entire journey, including roads away from the highway. Rivian, for now, is strongest when Autonomy+ is operating as a supervised hands-free system on roads it supports.
Rivian is building the technology needed to challenge Tesla
The gap may not remain static. Rivian’s August autonomy roadmap outlines several upgrades intended to move the system closer to route-based driving. Universal Hands-Free now covers roughly 3.5 million miles of roads across the United States and Canada when road conditions and lane markings meet its requirements.
Lane Change on Command has also moved beyond highways, allowing the feature to work on additional roads supported by Universal Hands-Free. Meanwhile, Rivian’s driver display can visualize traffic lights, stop signs and traffic cones, giving drivers a clearer picture of what the vehicle’s perception system is detecting.
The bigger step will be Point-to-Point. Rivian says the technology is being developed to manage city streets, turns, lane changes and highway interchanges while the person behind the wheel remains responsible for supervising the vehicle. Rivian is simultaneously bringing more of its autonomy hardware under its own control. The company’s RAP1 autonomy chip and next-generation AI platform are intended to provide additional computing capacity while reducing dependence on third-party hardware.
Its sensor strategy also differs from Tesla’s camera-heavy approach. Rivian is developing around cameras and radar, with lidar expected on future R2 hardware. That gives the company a different technical route toward improving how its vehicles understand difficult road environments.
Rivian undercuts Tesla on price, but Tesla offers more today
Rivian is also trying to make its assisted-driving package attractive on price. Autonomy+ is offered at $49.99 a month or through a $2,500 one-time purchase, with new Rivian vehicles receiving a 60-day trial. The one-time upgrade remains with the vehicle after an ownership change, subject to how long Rivian supports the hardware installed in that vehicle.
The R2 Performance with Launch Package goes further by including Autonomy+ for the life of the vehicle.
Tesla FSD was priced at $99 per month in the comparison, putting Rivian’s monthly subscription at roughly half that level. But the lower fee comes with a narrower capability set today. Tesla’s system can attempt more of a journey from beginning to end, while Rivian is still working toward comparable point-to-point functionality.
That also means Rivian is chasing a moving target. Tesla continues to refine FSD through software releases, with recent Tesla FSD V14.3.3 improvements addressing areas including reaction behavior, parking, unusual road scenarios and vision performance.
Point-to-Point could decide how close Rivian gets to Tesla
Rivian does not need to outperform Tesla everywhere for Autonomy+ to become a meaningful competitor. Its progress on highways already shows that the company can deliver a convincing hands-free experience. The harder challenge is reproducing that confidence when roads become less predictable.
That puts the planned Point-to-Point rollout at the center of Rivian’s autonomy story. Successfully handling intersections, city streets, complicated lane changes and highway transitions would move Autonomy+ into territory where Tesla FSD currently has the stronger position.
Until that software reaches customers and is tested across a much wider range of real-world conditions, Tesla FSD remains the more complete option for supervised point-to-point driving. Rivian counters with a lower subscription price, rapidly improving software and a broader sensor strategy that could become increasingly important as its next generation of vehicles arrives.
Neither system turns the vehicle into a fully autonomous car. Drivers are still expected to remain attentive and ready to take control. As Tesla and Rivian add more capable software, that distinction remains central to understanding what these systems can — and cannot — do.
