SALT LAKE CITY — Two people were killed and multiple others were injured Wednesday night after gunfire erupted outside a funeral at a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Redwood Road, according to Salt Lake City police and local reports.
Police said a call came in at about 7:36 p.m. reporting shots fired at the meetinghouse near 660 N. Redwood Road. Investigators believe an altercation broke out in the parking lot while a funeral was taking place inside the building, leading to multiple shots being fired.
The exact number of injured has varied in early reports as authorities worked to confirm victims, in part because some people were taken to hospitals by private vehicle before officers could fully account for everyone at the scene. Police spokesperson Glen Mills said there were at least eight victims in total, with two deaths confirmed. At least three people were listed in critical condition, and others were reported in unknown condition as the situation remained fluid.
No suspects were in custody as of the latest updates. Police said they were searching for at least one suspect who fled the area; a suspect vehicle was last seen heading north on Redwood Road, according to reports.
Officers established a search perimeter roughly spanning 500 North to 700 North along Redwood Road and extending toward the Jordan River. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area and asked anyone with information to contact police.
Witnesses described hearing multiple shots and then screams and crying outside as people inside the meetinghouse were told to remain in place while police secured the scene.
Road closures: Redwood Road was closed near the church as emergency crews responded, with officials warning the closure could last late into the night.
