Millions of Social Security beneficiaries are approaching the final birthday-based payment date of August 2026, with another round of benefits scheduled for Wednesday, August 26. The payment generally goes to people whose relevant birth date falls between the 21st and 31st and who follow Social Security’s standard Wednesday schedule.
The August 26 deposit is a regular monthly benefit, not an extra check, bonus or stimulus payment. Retirement beneficiaries and some Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients can be included, although important exceptions apply.
Who gets Social Security on August 26?
The Social Security Administration generally divides beneficiaries on the standard payment schedule into three birthday groups:
- Born 1st–10th: Wednesday, August 12
- Born 11th–20th: Wednesday, August 19
- Born 21st–31st: Wednesday, August 26
The SSA’s official 2026 payment calendar confirms August 26 as the fourth-Wednesday payment date.
For someone receiving benefits on another person’s earnings record, the payment schedule can depend on the birthday of the person whose record the benefit is based on.
Will SSDI recipients get paid August 26?
Some SSDI recipients will. Those covered by the birthday-based Social Security schedule generally follow the same second-, third- and fourth-Wednesday payment system.
However, not everyone born between the 21st and 31st receives a payment on August 26. People who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 generally follow a separate schedule.
People receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) also generally receive Social Security on the third and SSI on the first of the month, with adjustments when payment dates fall on weekends or federal holidays.
How much will Social Security pay?
There is no universal August 26 payment amount. Benefits vary according to factors including earnings history, claiming age and benefit type.
Social Security benefits increased 2.8% for 2026 under the annual cost-of-living adjustment. SSA estimates put the average monthly benefit for retired workers at about $2,071 after the increase and the average for disabled workers at about $1,630.
The maximum Social Security benefit for a worker retiring at full retirement age in 2026 is $4,152 per month. Most beneficiaries receive less than the maximum.
Why didn’t SSI arrive in August?
SSI is normally paid on the first day of the month. Because August 1, 2026 fell on a Saturday, the August SSI payment was issued early on Friday, July 31.
That July 31 deposit was the August benefit, not an extra payment. Beneficiaries can review the July 2026 Social Security and SSI payment schedule for more context on why two SSI deposits appeared during July.
The next regular SSI payment is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1.
For 2026, the maximum federal SSI amounts are $994 for an eligible individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple. Actual benefits may be lower depending on income, living arrangements and other circumstances.
Remaining SSI payment dates for 2026
- September 1: September payment
- October 1: October payment
- October 30: November payment
- December 1: December payment
- December 31: January 2027 payment
Two SSI deposits appearing in October or December do not mean recipients are receiving an additional monthly benefit. One deposit is simply the following month’s payment arriving early.

What time will the August 26 payment arrive?
There is no single clock time at which every Social Security direct deposit will appear. When funds become visible can vary depending on the beneficiary’s bank or financial institution.
Beneficiaries should therefore be cautious about assuming a payment is missing simply because another person’s deposit appeared earlier in the day.
What if your August 26 payment is late?
If an expected electronic payment does not appear, beneficiaries should first check with their bank or financial institution. SSA’s published payment guidance also advises allowing three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security about a payment that has not arrived as expected.
Beneficiaries should use official SSA channels and avoid unsolicited calls, emails or text messages claiming that a fee or personal information is required to release a payment.
When are September Social Security payments?
The next birthday-based payment cycle begins in September:
- September 9: Birth dates 1st–10th
- September 16: Birth dates 11th–20th
- September 23: Birth dates 21st–31st
The payment calendar comes as Social Security’s longer-term finances remain under scrutiny. A separate policy debate is examining what Australia’s retirement system could mean for Social Security and 401(k) savings, although no such proposal changes the August 26 payment schedule.
For beneficiaries in the fourth-Wednesday group, the immediate date to remember is August 26, 2026. It is the final regular birthday-based Social Security payment date of August.
