Nintendo has officially confirmed The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake for Nintendo Switch 2, ending years of speculation around one of the most influential video games ever made. The announcement arrived during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct and quickly became one of the eventâs biggest reveals.
The teaser was brief, showing a tapestry-inspired sequence and a sleeping Link rather than full gameplay. Still, Nintendo confirmed the remake is planned for 2026, a fitting window as The Legend of Zelda franchise marks its 40th anniversary.
First released on Nintendo 64 in 1998, Ocarina of Time changed the direction of 3D action-adventure games. Its Z-targeting lock-on system, context-sensitive controls, horseback travel with Epona, and puzzle-driven dungeons helped define how many modern adventure games are built.
A New Look for a Zelda Classic
Early footage suggests Nintendo is moving away from the painterly style of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The remake appears to lean into a more realistic fantasy look, while still keeping the atmosphere that made Linkâs journey through Hyrule so memorable.
Nintendo has revisited the game before. Ocarina of Time returned on GameCube with Master Quest, received a Nintendo 3DS remake in 2011, and remains playable through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The Switch 2 version, however, appears to be a much larger visual and technical rebuild.
According to Polygonâs report on the reveal, the remake is coming in 2026 and is expected to overhaul the Nintendo 64 classic for modern hardware.
The remake also arrives during an important period for Nintendoâs next-generation strategy. Recent discussion around Nintendo Switch 2 physical and digital game pricing shows how closely players are watching the platformâs software plans and long-term value.

Several questions remain unanswered. Nintendo has not shown combat, dungeons, exploration, voice acting, or any possible new story content. Fans are also waiting to learn whether this will be a faithful remake or a broader reimagining with expanded areas and modern gameplay systems.
With a live-action Legend of Zelda movie also planned for 2027, Nintendo is clearly preparing a major new era for the franchise. If the remake respects the original while improving how it plays for modern audiences, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake could become one of the defining Nintendo Switch 2 releases.
