Search crews are working by air and sea after a Fort Myers attorney and his nephew were reported missing following an offshore fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico, authorities said.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office identified the missing men as Randall “Randy” Spivey, 57, and Brandon Billmaier, 33. They left early Friday morning on a 42-foot Freeman boat, and were expected back by early evening — but never returned.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed it is involved in the case and said search-and-rescue teams are operating from the surface to the skies. Officials also urged private pilots and volunteer aircraft to maintain situational awareness and avoid interfering with active rescue operations.
What we know so far: The men departed early Friday, their boat was later found about 70 miles offshore, and crews continue searching a wide area of the Gulf as family and volunteers join the effort.
Boat located offshore, but both men still missing
Authorities said Spivey and Billmaier left from a residence in the 15000 block of Intracoastal Court in Fort Myers. Family members reported growing concern when the pair didn’t return by dinner. After waiting for an update, they contacted the Coast Guard.
Crews later located the vessel about 70 miles off the coast late Friday. The boat was described by family as appearing in good condition when it was found — but the two men were not onboard and no immediate explanation was available for what happened.
Local reporting on the case and official updates have been shared widely as the search continues, including by public radio partner coverage here: Search underway by Coast Guard and others for missing Fort Myers attorney and nephew.
Family’s pleas — and a community response
Relatives described a frantic stretch of hours as they waited for contact. Randy’s wife, Tricia Spivey, said the support they’ve received has been overwhelming — from boat owners to pilots — with people stepping in during the busiest week of the year.
“We’re bringing you back home,” she said, in a message shared publicly as the search grew.
Randy’s son, Randy Jr. Spivey, said his father and cousin went out alone on a deep-sea trip and were expected back before sunset. He recalled sending a routine text before the trip — “good luck” and “let me know what you catch” — followed by “I love you.” He said the family is still waiting for a reply.
Billmaier’s wife, Deborah, described the uncertainty as “a nightmare” and said she has been leaning on encouragement from friends and neighbors as volunteers continue to mobilize.
Family and friends also stressed that both men are experienced anglers. “They’re avid fishermen. This is their life,” a family member said, emphasizing that the pair know the offshore waters and take fishing seriously.
Volunteer boats and aircraft join Coast Guard search
While official crews continue their work, families have also organized a coordinated volunteer effort. A search party was planned for Sunday at first light, with organizers asking for vessels capable of a 200-mile range due to the distance offshore.
According to the family’s plan, boats would depart from ports between Punta Gorda and Marco Island, with the search area centered roughly 70 miles west of Naples. Organizers said updated search details would be distributed once a search area and grid information were confirmed.
Some volunteers have also searched from the air, including aircraft operating out of the Naples area. Officials at Naples Airport have reduced fuel costs for pilots who want to assist, family members said.
Important safety note: Authorities have warned that uncoordinated aircraft can create unsafe conditions and interfere with rescue operations. If you’re in the area, follow official guidance and avoid the active search zone unless you are directed to assist.
