Spotify outage causing music streaming and app access problems

Spotify Confirms Major Outage as Users Report Widespread Streaming and App Problems

Spotify users across multiple regions experienced widespread service problems on Tuesday after the music streaming company confirmed an ongoing outage affecting core platform functions, including music playback, app access, and saved libraries.

Reports of issues began climbing shortly after 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET on May 12, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector. Complaints increased steadily throughout the afternoon as users reported problems streaming music, loading playlists, and connecting to Spotify servers.

By early afternoon, more than 150 outage complaints had already been recorded, though actual impact appeared significantly broader based on social media reactions and user discussions online.

Spotify later publicly acknowledged the disruption in a statement posted on X, writing: “We’re aware of some issues right now with the app and are checking them out!”

Downdetector data showed the majority of complaints were tied directly to the Spotify app itself. Around 54% of reports involved app functionality issues, while approximately 19% were related to server connection failures. Another 18% of users reported audio streaming problems.

Users across mobile, desktop, and connected devices described a range of issues, including songs refusing to play, playlists failing to load, libraries disappearing temporarily, and repeated login or syncing failures. Some listeners reported the service briefly returned before experiencing additional interruptions later.

The outage quickly became one of the platform’s top trending discussions online as frustrated subscribers searched for updates and possible fixes. Spotify has not yet shared a technical explanation for the disruption or provided a timetable for when full service stability will return.

Because Spotify serves hundreds of millions of users globally across music, podcasts, and audiobooks, even short disruptions often create immediate spikes in outage reports and support traffic. The incident also highlighted growing dependence on cloud-based streaming services for daily entertainment and media consumption.

The outage arrives amid increasing competition in the streaming industry from platforms such as Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music. Spotify itself has also faced investor pressure in recent quarters following weaker-than-expected subscriber numbers and earnings results, as discussed in our recent coverage of Spotify stock plunging after its subscriber miss. Some users online even joked about testing alternative platforms while Spotify engineers work to resolve the issues.

For now, users experiencing problems are being advised to restart the app, verify internet connectivity, and continue monitoring Spotify’s official support accounts for updates regarding the outage.
