A British man has died after a fatal fall from Mount Urgull, one of San Sebastián’s most visited viewpoints, in northern Spain.
The 38-year-old tourist was discovered on Friday morning on the Paseo Nuevo coastal walkway, a route that runs below the historic hill and along the city’s rugged seafront. Local reports said he had fallen from a height of around 400ft before being found by a passer-by at about 11am.
Emergency services were sent to the scene, but the man could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the location. Basque police, known as the Ertzaintza, are now investigating how the fall happened.
The incident is understood to have taken place near the Baluarte del Mirador observation area on the eastern side of Mount Urgull. The viewpoint is close to a large Basque flag and overlooks the Salamanca promenade, Zuloaga square and the coastline around La Concha Bay.
Firefighters and traffic officers were also called to the area as part of the emergency response. According to local reports, access to the body was difficult because of the position below the hill, and a ladder truck was used during the recovery operation.
People working nearby described seeing police vehicles and road closures close to the San Telmo Museum, a well-known cultural site at the foot of Mount Urgull. One worker at Zazpi restaurant said the road had been blocked near the Photography Society while officers dealt with the scene.
The man has not been publicly named. His body was transferred to the Basque Institute of Legal Medicine, where a post-mortem examination is expected to help confirm the precise cause of death.

Although the area is a major tourist draw, parts of the surrounding terrain are steep and exposed, especially near viewing points and cliffside paths.
Authorities have not said whether the fall was accidental, and no further details about the man’s movements before the incident have been released. The police investigation remains ongoing.
This is not the first fatal fall reported at Mount Urgull. In 2019, a 65-year-old woman died in similar circumstances at the same beauty spot, according to local media reports.
