Star Fox Switch 2 Physical Edition Drops Below Digital Price Ahead Of June Launch

Nintendo’s long-dormant Star Fox franchise is suddenly back at the center of the Switch 2 conversation, and the renewed excitement is being driven by more than nostalgia alone. Just weeks before launch, UK retailers have started selling the physical version of the game for less than Nintendo’s own digital price, creating one of the most talked-about pre-order situations surrounding the Switch 2 so far.

According to Nintendo Life, retailer Currys is currently offering a 10% discount on physical pre-orders of Star Fox. While the boxed edition normally costs £44.99, the discount cuts the price to £40.49. Nintendo’s digital eShop version remains listed at £41.99, meaning buyers can currently save money by choosing the cartridge instead of the download.

That pricing difference may appear minor at first glance, but it has become a major talking point among Nintendo fans because physical editions of first-party Nintendo games have traditionally been more expensive than digital versions. The deal has also added momentum to a game that already surprised players simply by existing.

Nintendo officially announced the new Star Fox earlier this month during a dedicated Direct presentation focused entirely on the franchise. The game launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, 2026 and acts as a modern remake of the Nintendo 64 classic Star Fox 64. Nintendo has upgraded the visuals, expanded cinematic storytelling, and modernized gameplay systems while keeping the classic on-rails shooter structure that made the original iconic.

Players once again control Fox McCloud alongside Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare and Slippy Toad as the Star Fox team battles Andross across the Lylat System. Nintendo has also confirmed online multiplayer support, updated controls, amiibo functionality, and a day-one update that unlocks additional online features.

The announcement alone was enough to generate strong online interest because the franchise has been mostly inactive since Star Fox Zero released on Wii U. Nintendo fans had spent years wondering whether the company would revisit the series after its commercial struggles during the Wii U era.

The renewed attention surrounding the franchise intensified after Fox McCloud unexpectedly appeared in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, introducing the character to newer audiences while reigniting discussion around Nintendo’s sci-fi universe. The timing of the new game announcement shortly afterward immediately fueled speculation that Nintendo may have larger plans for the franchise beyond gaming.

The unusual pricing situation has also reopened debate around Nintendo’s broader Switch 2 pricing strategy. Physical versus digital pricing has become a growing topic among Switch 2 owners, particularly as some retailers have started aggressively discounting boxed copies before release. Swikblog recently explored this trend in Nintendo Switch 2 physical vs digital price difference, where fans questioned whether digital purchases still offer enough value compared to cartridges.

Currys is not only discounting Star Fox. Reports also show lower pre-order prices for other upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 games including Rhythm Paradise Groove and Splatoon Raiders, further increasing pressure on Nintendo’s digital storefront pricing.

For collectors, longtime Nintendo fans, and players who prefer owning physical media, the current Star Fox deal creates a rare situation where the cartridge version offers both better value and long-term ownership advantages. With the June release date approaching quickly, Nintendo’s unexpected Star Fox revival is now shaping up as one of the company’s most closely watched Switch 2 launches of 2026.
