Cameron Munster will once again walk into a packed State of Origin arena as Queensland captain, but this yearâs return to Sydney carries emotions far deeper than football. Nearly one year after the sudden death of his father Steven Munster, the Maroons playmaker is still learning how to balance elite rugby league with personal grief.
The Melbourne Storm star was preparing for last yearâs Origin decider when his family delivered the devastating news that his father had died unexpectedly from a heart attack at the age of 58. According to his mother Debbie, the family had spoken with Steven late at night, only for him to pass away hours later the following morning.
Debbie Munster later described making the phone call to Cameron inside Queensland camp as one of the hardest moments of her life. Despite the emotional shock, Munster decided to stay with the squad and lead Queensland into the decider against New South Wales.
That performance quickly became one of the defining moments of the 2025 State of Origin series. Munster captained the Maroons to victory while carrying the weight of personal tragedy, later breaking down in tears alongside Queensland coach Billy Slater after full-time in Sydney.
In an interview reported by ABC Sport, Munster admitted last yearâs series carried âa bit more motivationâ because of his fatherâs passing. Steven Munster had always played a major role in his sonâs football journey, regularly calling before games with honest advice and encouragement.
Family grief behind the Origin spotlight
Munsterâs sister Danielle Kersnovske said the past year has been extremely difficult for the family, especially as Cameron tried to manage Origin responsibilities, Melbourne Storm commitments and public expectations all at once.
Questions around Munsterâs club form earlier this season only added to the pressure. However, the Queensland five-eighth has recently shown signs of returning to his best football, helping Melbourne secure important wins ahead of the Origin opener.
Queensland coach Billy Slater has continued to publicly back his captain, insisting Munster remains one of the gameâs elite match-winners. His performance during Brisbaneâs Magic Round again reminded fans why he thrives on rugby leagueâs biggest stage.

Playing for more than football
For the Munster family, tonightâs Origin match is about more than rivalry or trophies. It is another emotional milestone in a year still shaped by loss, resilience and pride.
Debbie Munster believes her late husband would simply want Cameron to âgive it his allâ every time he steps onto the field. That message continues to drive Queenslandâs captain as he leads the Maroons into another fierce State of Origin battle.
