State of Origin returns to Sydney tonight, but fans planning their evening should know one thing early: the official kick-off time may not be the exact moment the ball is put into play.
Game 1 of the 2026 State of Origin series between the NSW Blues and Queensland Maroons is listed for 8.05pm AEST at Accor Stadium on Wednesday, May 27. However, with pre-game entertainment, broadcast build-up and match-day ceremony, the real kick-off is more likely to land closer to 8.10pm to 8.15pm AEST.
Quick guide: Gates open at 6pm, pre-game entertainment starts at 7.30pm, official kick-off is 8.05pm, and full-time is expected around 10pm.
Game 1 schedule and TV coverage
The build-up at Sydney Olympic Park begins well before the main event. Box offices open at 5pm, precinct activity begins from 5.30pm, gates open at 6pm, and the Peter Mulholland Cup kicks off at 6.05pm. That preliminary game is expected to finish around 7.15pm, before the pre-match entertainment starts at 7.30pm.
The main game remains officially scheduled for 8.05pm AEST, but Origin nights rarely run like a regular club match. Fans watching from home should be tuned in by the advertised time, while also expecting the opening kick to come a few minutes later.
The match will be shown live and free on Channel 9 and 9Now. Fox League will also provide extensive pre-match coverage and replays after the final siren.
Transport warning for 80,000 fans
With around 80,000 supporters expected at Accor Stadium, ticketholders are being urged to leave the car at home and use public transport to avoid weeknight peak-hour delays around Sydney Olympic Park.
Match tickets include travel on public transport, with fans able to show their ticket when boarding services. Express and limited-stop trains will run to Olympic Park from Central and Western Line stations from mid-afternoon, with frequent return services continuing until late. From Olympic Park Station, Accor Stadium is about a 10-minute walk.
Sydney Olympic Park Major Event Buses will also operate across all nine routes every 5 to 20 minutes between 3.42pm and 6.48pm, depending on the route. The last return bus is scheduled to leave Olympic Park at 11pm.
Fans who have no option but to drive must have pre-booked parking. A flat $35 parking fee applies, and those without a booking are advised to park near a commuter station and continue by train or bus.
Post-match traffic is expected to be heavy, with drivers warned to allow up to an extra hour when leaving car parks. Taxi ranks will operate on Herb Elliott Avenue near Park Street, but rideshare and taxi demand is likely to surge after full-time.
For fans heading to the ground, the safest plan is simple: arrive early, use public transport where possible, and be in position before 8.05pm. For viewers at home, the true start of Origin 2026 may arrive closer to 8.15pm.
