Costco and Walmart Pulled Into Expanding Salmonella Recall as Popular Cheese Bread Joins Growing List

A nationwide salmonella recall that began with powdered milk supplied by California Dairies Inc. continues to expand, with Costco and Walmart among the latest major retailers affected. The newest addition involves Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread, but the recall now stretches far beyond a single product and includes frozen pizzas, chips, croutons, trail mixes, popcorn seasonings, powdered drink mixes and other packaged foods sold across the United States.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration first announced concerns involving potentially contaminated powdered milk products on April 20. A follow-up notice from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service was issued on April 30. Regulators warned at the time that additional products could be added as manufacturers traced ingredients through their supply chains.

Costco and Walmart Among Retailers Impacted

The latest recall involves select Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread products distributed nationwide through Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Publix, Target, Meijer and other grocery chains. Champion Foods LLC said the products may contain a seasoning ingredient made with powdered milk linked to the broader recall.

The affected products include Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread Single Pack (UPC 87037500511) with sell-by dates between February 4, 2027, and April 21, 2027, along with Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread 2 Pack (UPC 870375005098) carrying sell-by dates between February 3, 2027, and March 25, 2027.

What makes this recall notable is its growing reach. Since April, dozens of products from different manufacturers have been pulled from store shelves because they contain ingredients traced back to the recalled milk powder.

Dozens of Popular Food Products Added

The expanding list now includes Great Value Chicken Bacon Ranch pizzas sold at Walmart, Mama Cozzi’s breakfast pizzas sold at Aldi, Kroger Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons, Blackstone Parmesan Ranch seasoning, Ghirardelli powdered beverage mixes, Zapp’s and Dirty potato chips, Fisher Tex-Mex Trail Mix, Southern Style Nuts snack mixes and several popcorn products sold through Williams Sonoma.

Other recalled items include taco pizzas distributed under regional brands, cheese curds, pork rinds, sour cream and onion seasonings, smoothie mixes, cappuccino powders and specialty beverage ingredients used by restaurants and cafés.

Swikblog recently covered another major FDA salmonella recall affecting chips, popcorn and frozen pizza products, highlighting how a single contaminated ingredient can affect multiple food categories and brands nationwide.

What Consumers Should Know

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, consumers should not eat recalled products and should instead return them to the place of purchase or contact the manufacturer for a refund or replacement.

Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting. Symptoms typically appear between six hours and six days after exposure. While most healthy adults recover within a week, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious illness.

As more manufacturers complete ingredient reviews, additional products could still be added to the recall. Consumers are encouraged to check package labels, UPC codes and sell-by dates against the latest FDA and USDA recall notices before consuming affected products.
