Motor City Pizza Co. Five Cheese Bread products have been recalled nationwide after Champion Foods LLC flagged a possible Salmonella risk tied to an ingredient used in the product’s cheese sauce seasoning blend.
The recall affects select frozen cheese bread products sold through several major U.S. retailers, including Costco, Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix, Meijer, Hy-Vee, Food City, Giant Landover, Grocery Outlet, Jewel, Schnucks, Brookshire Grocery, SpartanNash, Supervalu and other distributors.
Costco notified members on May 30 about the recall, warning customers who may have purchased Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread between February 6 and May 29, 2026. The product may still be sitting in home freezers because the affected sell-by dates run into 2027.
Champion Foods said the recall was launched after California Dairies, Inc. recalled milk powder over possible Salmonella contamination. That milk powder was supplied to a third-party manufacturer that makes a seasoning blend used in the Five Cheese Bread sauce mixture.
The company said it has not received reports of illness or injury linked to the recalled products. Champion Foods also said routine testing by the seasoning blend manufacturer came back negative for Salmonella before the ingredient was used. Even so, the company said the recall was being carried out as a precaution to protect customers.

Anyone with a recalled product should not eat it. Customers can return the item to the store where it was purchased for a refund or dispose of it safely so it cannot be consumed by mistake.
Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, often within 8 to 72 hours after exposure. Some people may also experience nausea, vomiting, chills, headache or blood in the stool. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness.
The recall is connected to a wider food safety issue involving California Dairies powdered milk ingredients, which have already been linked to other product recalls. Swikblog previously covered the FDA salmonella recall involving Ghirardelli, Zapp’s and Giant Eagle products, which was also tied to the same broader dairy ingredient concern.

For shoppers, the key step is to check frozen products carefully before heating or serving them. Because frozen foods can remain in freezers for months, recalled items may still be in homes long after store shelves have been cleared.
