Europe’s Largest River Cruise Ship AmaRudi Unveiled

Europe’s river cruise industry is entering a new chapter with the unveiling of AmaRudi, AmaWaterways’ latest luxury vessel that is set to become one of Europe’s largest river cruise ships. Scheduled to begin sailing on the Danube River in spring 2027, the ship combines the intimate atmosphere of river cruising with the comfort, entertainment and dining choices typically associated with much larger ocean cruise ships.

Rather than increasing passenger numbers dramatically, AmaWaterways has focused on giving guests more personal space, additional restaurants and expanded leisure facilities. The approach reflects changing travel preferences as more vacationers seek premium river cruises without sacrificing modern comforts.

A Second Mega River Cruise Ship for AmaWaterways

AmaRudi will join AmaMagna, the company’s first double-width vessel, on Danube itineraries in 2027. Together, the two ships are recognized as Europe’s largest river cruise ships, offering a wider design than traditional river vessels while still navigating one of the continent’s most popular waterways.

The new ship measures approximately 443 feet (135 metres) long and will accommodate 196 guests supported by a crew of around 70. Instead of filling the additional space with more cabins, AmaWaterways has used it to create wider lounges, expanded public areas and more guest-focused amenities.

Why AmaRudi Carries a Special Name

AmaRudi is the first ship in the AmaWaterways fleet named after a man. It honors company co-founder Rudi Schreiner, who grew up near Austria’s Danube River and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern river cruising.

According to Schreiner, AmaMagna changed what travelers believed was possible on a river cruise ship. As demand for luxury river cruising continues to grow, the company believes now is the right time to expand that concept with a second mega vessel. Schreiner also described having the ship named after him as a meaningful milestone reflecting the legacy built over more than two decades.

Dining Options Offer More Choice

AmaRudi has been designed with several dining venues instead of relying on one primary restaurant. Guests will be able to enjoy meals at Journey’s Restaurant, experience specialty dining at The Chef’s Table, relax with outdoor al fresco dining, visit the intimate Rudi’s Wine Bar and enjoy freshly prepared food at the Deck Club barbecue located on the sun deck.

The wider variety reflects one of the biggest trends in luxury cruising, where travelers increasingly expect flexible dining options throughout their vacation rather than fixed seating and limited menus.

Entertainment Goes Beyond Traditional River Cruises

AmaRudi introduces entertainment features that are still uncommon on European river cruise ships. The vessel will include a cinema, karaoke area, jukebox, billiards and a dedicated snooker table, creating more options for guests after returning from daily shore excursions.

One of the most talked-about additions is an onboard pickleball court. The rapidly growing sport has become increasingly popular with travelers, making its appearance on a river cruise ship a notable feature that sets AmaRudi apart from many competitors.

Spa and Wellness Designed for Longer Journeys

The wellness area will feature massage treatment rooms, hair and nail services and a modern fitness centre. AmaWaterways says the ship’s public spaces will also draw inspiration from destinations along the Danube, helping create a stronger connection between the onboard experience and the landscapes guests will explore during the voyage.

These facilities are intended to provide a boutique hotel atmosphere while passengers travel through some of Europe’s best-known riverside cities and cultural landmarks.

Why Bigger River Cruise Ships Are Gaining Momentum

Luxury river cruising continues to attract travelers who previously preferred ocean cruises. While passengers appreciate smaller guest numbers and easier access to historic city centres, many also want larger cabins, additional restaurants, wellness facilities and more onboard entertainment.

AmaRudi reflects that changing demand. Rather than competing with massive ocean liners on passenger capacity, the ship focuses on creating more personal space and greater choice while preserving the relaxed pace that defines river cruising.

What Travelers Should Watch Before the 2027 Launch

AmaRudi is expected to begin sailing the Danube in spring 2027. Additional information, including itineraries, cabin categories, fares and booking dates, is expected to be released before the ship enters service. Travelers interested in inaugural sailings may benefit from monitoring future announcements as demand for new luxury river cruise launches is often high.
