Europe’s Largest River Cruise Ship AmaRudi Unveiled

Updated: July 4, 2026

AmaWaterways has unveiled AmaRudi, a new luxury river cruise ship that is scheduled to begin sailing on the Danube River in spring 2027. The vessel will become the company’s second double-width ship, joining AmaMagna, and is designed to offer more space, additional dining venues and expanded onboard facilities without significantly increasing passenger capacity.

The announcement reflects continued growth in Europe’s premium river cruise market, where travelers are increasingly looking for larger suites, flexible dining and modern entertainment while still enjoying the slower pace and convenient city-center access that river cruising provides.

AmaRudi expands AmaWaterways’ flagship fleet

AmaRudi follows the success of AmaMagna, which introduced a wider ship design to the Danube in 2019. Unlike traditional European river vessels, the double-width concept focuses on comfort rather than maximizing guest numbers.

The new ship will measure approximately 443 feet (135 metres) in length and accommodate 196 guests with a crew of around 70. The additional space has been used for larger public areas, wider lounges and upgraded guest amenities instead of extra cabins.

Named after river cruising pioneer Rudi Schreiner

The ship is named after Rudi Schreiner, AmaWaterways’ co-founder and one of the best-known figures in modern river cruising. Schreiner grew up near Austria’s Danube River and has helped shape European river cruise itineraries and ship design for decades.

AmaRudi is the first vessel in the company’s fleet named after a man. According to AmaWaterways, the decision recognizes Schreiner’s long-standing contribution to the industry and his role in developing the double-width river ship concept.

More restaurants and flexible dining

Dining is one of the biggest changes aboard AmaRudi. Instead of relying on a single main restaurant, guests will have several venues to choose from throughout their voyage.

The ship will feature Journey’s Restaurant, the specialty dining experience The Chef’s Table, outdoor al fresco seating, Rudi’s Wine Bar and a Deck Club barbecue on the sun deck.

This wider selection reflects changing expectations among luxury travelers, many of whom now prefer greater flexibility instead of fixed dining schedules.

Entertainment aims to stand out on the Danube

AmaRudi will introduce several entertainment options that remain uncommon on European river cruise ships. Plans include a cinema, karaoke lounge, jukebox, billiards, a dedicated snooker table and multiple social spaces for evenings onboard.

Another notable addition is a pickleball court, highlighting how cruise operators are adapting to travel trends by offering activities that have become increasingly popular with guests in North America and Europe.

Wellness facilities receive a major upgrade

The wellness area has been designed for guests taking longer river journeys across Central Europe. Facilities will include massage treatment rooms, hair and beauty services, a fitness centre and relaxation spaces inspired by destinations along the Danube.

Rather than functioning simply as transport between ports, AmaWaterways says the ship has been planned to provide a boutique hotel experience throughout the voyage.

Why larger river ships are attracting more travelers

Demand for premium river cruising has remained strong as more vacationers look for smaller ships without giving up the comforts commonly found on ocean cruises. Spacious cabins, multiple restaurants and expanded wellness facilities have become key selling points for many new bookings.

Unlike large ocean liners carrying thousands of passengers, river ships continue to offer easier access to historic city centres while maintaining a quieter onboard atmosphere. AmaRudi is part of that trend, using its wider design to improve comfort rather than increase capacity.

What happens before the first sailing?

AmaRudi is expected to enter service during spring 2027 on Danube itineraries. AmaWaterways is expected to release additional information on sailing schedules, suite categories, pricing and reservation dates closer to launch.

New cruise ships often attract strong early demand, particularly for inaugural sailings. Travelers interested in the first season may benefit from watching future booking announcements from the cruise line.
