Royal St. John’s Regatta 2026: Results, Winners and Full Race Schedule

The 208th Royal St. John’s Regatta went ahead at Quidi Vidi Lake on Wednesday, August 5, bringing 65 crews onto the water for a 20-race program that will finish with the women’s and men’s championship events.

The early-morning decision by Regatta Committee vice-president Shannon Brown ended another round of “Regatta roulette,” the local tradition of waiting for a weather call before knowing whether the races and St. John’s municipal holiday will proceed.

The first race started at 8 a.m. NT. Championship racing is expected from approximately 6:30 p.m. NT, although conditions and delays earlier in the program could affect the evening start times.

Results from Quidi Vidi Lake

Volkswagen delivered the fastest winning time among the early published results, completing the Amateur Senior Women’s race in 5:07.73. Puglisevich won the Mercantile Senior Women’s contest, while Fine Strokes Plaster & Painting Ltd. led the Amateur Senior Men’s field.

The table reflects results published during the earlier portion of the race card. Final finishing orders, later divisions and any disqualifications are available through the official Royal St. John’s Regatta results service.

Volkswagen St. John’s entered the event as the defending women’s champion, with Capital Home Hardware returning as the defending men’s champion. Their earlier form does not determine the evening contests, where buoy turns, timing and coordination can quickly change the order.

Each fixed-seat shell carries six rowers and a coxswain. Unlike a straight sprint, crews start and finish in the same area after turning around buoys at the halfway point. A slow or poorly judged turn can erase an advantage built during the opening section.

The broadcast arrangements are also different this year. Rogers TV is not carrying its familiar full-day television and radio presentation. Organizers have moved to online coverage, while NTV is scheduled to show the women’s and men’s championship races live.

Remote viewers should check the latest timing before the finals. Water events can shift when conditions change, as happened when the Canada Sail Grand Prix in Halifax revised its Sunday race time.

A sporting event that sets the city’s schedule

The Regatta is more than a race meeting for St. John’s. The decision to proceed activates a weather-dependent municipal holiday that is normally held on the first Wednesday in August. City offices, recreation facilities and community centres are closed, while scheduled garbage collection continues.

Road closures, tow-away zones and parking restrictions are in effect around Quidi Vidi Lake. Metrobus shuttle services provide an alternative for visitors travelling to the grounds. Checking the route before leaving is useful at any crowded public race, including events such as the Big Easter Run Vancouver and its waterfront courses.

The lakeside program includes food vendors, carnival games, music and family activities. Attendance can reach between 30,000 and 50,000 people, explaining why the weather decision affects local transport, workplaces and family plans well beyond the rowing community.

For Debbie Mercer, that connection spans generations. She began attending at two years old, later brought her children and now returns with her grandchildren. The CLB Band provides another link to the event’s past, having performed at the Regatta since 1964. Its most requested tune, “Up the Pond,” can be played around 30 times during the day.

Participation is one area organizers want to strengthen. This year’s field contains 52 women’s teams but only 13 men’s teams. Committee president Keith White hopes to raise the overall number from 65 to 79 in 2027 by visiting schools, working with service groups and possibly restoring older race categories.

First-time under-18 competitors Joel Decker, Ryder Gosse and Benjamin Strong illustrate how that recruitment could work. The three were encouraged by friends to try rowing and believe watching the races could inspire other young people to join.

The committee officially dates the first Regatta to 1818 and describes it as North America’s oldest continuous sporting event. Its 208th edition retains the familiar mix of racing and family tradition while confronting two modern challenges: expanding participation and moving live coverage toward digital platforms.
