Fortnite players are unable to enter matches on Thursday, August 20, as Epic Games carries out scheduled maintenance for the v42.00 update. Matchmaking was disabled shortly before the servers went offline as Fortnite prepares for Chapter 7 Season 4: Override.
Players seeing matchmaking errors should know that this is planned downtime rather than necessarily a problem with their console, PC or internet connection. While Epic’s maintenance remains active, restarting Fortnite or changing matchmaking settings will not bring the servers back.
When will Fortnite servers be back up?
Fortnite downtime began at 2:00 a.m. ET (6:00 a.m. UTC) on August 20, with matchmaking disabled roughly 30 minutes earlier. The expected maintenance window is around five hours, putting the anticipated end at approximately 7:00 a.m. ET (11:00 a.m. UTC).
For players in India, downtime started at 11:30 a.m. IST and could continue until approximately 4:30 p.m. IST. Other expected return times include 4:00 a.m. PT, 6:00 a.m. CT, 7:00 p.m. in Singapore and 8:00 p.m. in Japan.
These are expected times, not guarantees. Maintenance can be extended if Epic encounters problems while deploying the update. Players should use the official Epic Games server status page to confirm when Fortnite services are operational.
Previous releases have followed a similar pattern. During the Fortnite v40.40 server downtime, matchmaking was also disabled before maintenance while Epic prepared the new version.
Why is Fortnite matchmaking not working?
Matchmaking is intentionally unavailable during the v42.00 deployment. Players may see matchmaking errors, server unavailable messages or be unable to enter playlists until Epic restores the relevant services.
Downloading v42.00 also does not mean Fortnite is ready to play. The game update and Epic’s online servers are separate parts of the rollout, so players can have the latest version installed while login or matchmaking remains offline.
Outage-reporting services may also show a spike during this period because players report failed connections. During announced maintenance, however, those reports do not automatically indicate a separate Fortnite outage.

What is new in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4?
Version 42.00 introduces Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, a gaming-themed season with significant changes to the Battle Royale island, new gameplay mechanics, weapons, Sprites and crossover content.
Locations associated with the update include Geno’s HQ, Green Hill Zone, Temple, The Spire and Pac-Man Island. New locations can quickly change popular landing areas, loot routes and rotations as players learn the updated map.
The update also brings gaming-inspired equipment, with content linked to Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris and Mega Man. Weapons and items reported around the rollout include the 8-Bit Shotgun, HJSH-18 Masamune Assault Rifle and TKI-20 Shingen SMG.
Sprites also return with new characters and gameplay effects. The lineup associated with Override includes Sonic, Tails, Klombo, Shadow, Jackrabbit, 8-Bit and other variants. Some can provide movement, loot or combat-related advantages.
The Override Battle Pass continues the season’s gaming theme, with Sonic among its headline characters and Tails connected to the Sidekick system.
The seasonal transition resembles earlier major Fortnite launches, including the Chapter 7 Season 2 Showdown update, where players also had to wait for server-side maintenance before accessing the new content.
What to do if matchmaking errors continue
Players should wait until Epic confirms maintenance is complete before attempting extensive troubleshooting. If Fortnite is officially operational but matchmaking still fails, restart the game and launcher or console, confirm v42.00 is fully installed, check for another update and verify the selected matchmaking region.
Players should also expect the possibility of login queues immediately after downtime. Thousands of users can return at once following a major seasonal update, so servers being restored does not necessarily mean everyone will enter immediately.
The key signal will be Epic marking Fortnite’s maintenance as completed. Until then, matchmaking errors during the v42.00 rollout are consistent with the scheduled shutdown rather than evidence that individual devices need fixing.
